ISA's Research Grants

Our Research Workshop Grant Program

The ISA Research Workshop Grants program was created in 1992 to encourage research collaboration in the workshop format for ISA members. In 2007, the Governing Council expanded and restructured the Workshop Grant program, more than doubling the total amount of funds available. Today, the Research Workshop Grants program is a vibrant part of ISA support for the advancement of knowledge in the international studies community.

Research Workshop Grants (up to $2,500) encourage applicants to explore significant research problems in the field, including those which invite new and diverse perspectives, approaches, and methods. These grants aim to bring together small groups of participants focusing on a significant research problem which stimulates cross-national inquiry and engages several subfields and/or disciplines. The workshop itself is expected to result in significant scholarly outputs, such as a book-length manuscript and scholarly articles.

Please note that for the 2023 year, Research Workshops may be held in person at the 2023 ISA Annual Convention in Montreal, virtually, or elsewhere, at the discretion of the project team. Funding available for the program this upcoming year (2023) is $50,000.

The application deadline for 2023 is July 1, 2022.

Research Workshop Grant Submissions for the ISA 2021 Annual Convention have now passed. Workshop recipients will receive notification of their acceptance in mid-September.
