GSC Distinguished Scholar Award

The Global South Caucus Distinguished Scholar Award is given annually in recognition of the recipient’s exceptional and sustained contribution to global South international studies, as defined within the context of the ISA and reflected in the scholar’s teaching, published work, and policy contributions. The award rotates yearly through global South regions, broadly conceived as Africa/Middle East, Asia/Eurasia, and Latin America/Caribbean. If the recipient is able to attend the ISA Annual Convention at which the award is given, s/he will be expected to give a brief address (of approximately 15 minutes) to GSCIS members during the award ceremony.   In seeking to promote scholarship from the global South, preference will be given to nominated South scholars.

General Information

Recipients must meet the Following Criteria

  • A distinguished record of scholarship in terms of teaching and publications that reflect a sustained interest in global South affairs.
  • Membership in ISA is not mandatory but familiarity with the association and past participation in ISA activities is desirable.
  • Work experience in or on the global South region to which the award corresponds in a given year (Africa/Middle East, Asia/Eurasia, or Latin America/Caribbean).

  • The recipient receives a plaque, which is presented at the ISA Annual Convention.

Selection Process

  • The GSCIS Chair will solicit nominations from the general GSCIS membership in September. All nominations must be received before the end of October and must present a full CV and bio for each nominee, along with a paragraph explaining the rationale for the nomination.
  • The GSCIS Executive Committee will appoint the Distinguished Scholar Selection Subcommittee, to be comprised of the GSCIS Chair, the GSCIS Board Member(s)-at-Large from the award region, and two other former at-large Board Members whose work focuses on the award region.
  • The Selection Subcommittee will review the nominations received, add its own nominations (if it so decides) and present a final candidate to the GSCIS Executive Committee for approval.
  • The Executive Committee will vote on the candidate presented for the Distinguished Scholar Award.  If a majority of the Executive Committee does not approve the candidate, the Selection Committee must again review the nominations and present an alternate candidate for approval.
