Innovative Pedagogy Conference 2018 - Onsite Information

ISA Innovative Pedagogy Conference 2018

Our first annual ISA Innovative Pedagogy Conference (ISA-IPC) is just around the corner, and we are delighted that you will be joining us!  Our planning committee, composed of your fellow teacher-scholars from around the country, has been working hard to organize an exciting day-long conference on Thursday, November 15th at the Hilton Ballpark in St. Louis. This will be the beginning of an engaging series of meetings that will underscore our commitment to teaching with purpose in international studies. This year’s conference will provide valuable resources and professional development opportunities for faculty members and graduate students. It features dynamic workshops on a range of important pedagogy themes—and our workshop leaders are ready to engage with you and share ideas. We also offer a certification workshop for graduate teaching assistant training, as well as networking opportunities through plenary sessions.
This year’s conference will be held in conjunction with the ISA Midwest Conference. We would like to thank our colleagues and regional leaders—especially Carla Martinez Machain and Brian Lai—for their assistance. We hope that many of you will be staying to participate in the ISA Midwest meetings next weekend.
As you prepare for the ISA-IPC conference day and travel to St. Louis, please keep in mind some important elements of our schedule:
  • Registration Opens:  8:00 am – 10:00 am in the Hilton hotel lobby (check-in is required)
  • Opening Plenary Session: 9:00 am – 9:20 am, Ballpark Room 1
  • Workshop Sessions:  9:30 am – 5:30 pm
  • Graduate Student Teacher Training Workshop:  1:00 pm – 2:00 pm (advanced reservation required)
  • Evening Plenary Networking Session, featuring Keynote Address by ISA President Patrick James:  6:00 pm, Ballpark 1
In summary, we hope that you are as excited as we are to engage in this wonderful professional development opportunity at our inaugural conference. Please feel free to bring along your ideas and even materials to share.
We look forward to greeting you in St. Louis and wish you safe travels!

A Few Spots Left for ISA West "Pay it Forward" Participants

ISA West-Pay It Forward still has a few open spots. If you are on the ISA West Program and are a female-identifying graduate student or junior faculty who would like mentoring and additional support, consider applying for Pay it Forward. Pay it Forward-West will pair you with established female-identifying scholars that can provide mentoring and insight from their experiences working in the field of international studies. The program is intended to create enduring connections among West members that benefit both mentors and mentees, professionally and personally. This year's programming will consist of two components:
  1. A Pay it Forward mentoring lunch provided free to program participants only. The lunch will take place during the Friday lunch break.
  2. A Pay it Forward Mentoring Cafe roundtable open to all conference attendees.

Senior  scholars will share mentoring advice and experiences and engage in a Q&A session with audience members. The roundtable takes place during the Saturday morning session (8:30-10:15). To apply, female-identifying advanced graduate students and early career faculty should submit a current resume to the ISA West Program Chair, Amy Skonieczny at ( We also ask that applicants describe (on a ten-point scale, 1 being none and 10 being excellent) their existing support system (at your current institution or otherwise). Finally, mention whether you have previously participated in the ISA PiF program.

The deadline to apply is Friday, August 31st, 2018. Preference is given to individuals already registered and on the program, to those from the West region and to those who have not been selected for ISA PiF in the past, though others may apply. Unfortunately, we cannot offer any  additional funding. Mentors have already been selected.
