The editors of Global Studies Quarterly invite submissions for a special issue on the topic of cruelty and global politics, with a focus on cruelty’s connections with, and as a manifestation of, global injustice and inequality. We invite manuscripts for this special issue that involve a wide variety of approaches, methods, and perspectives, including how cruelty can be studied and understood historically, legally, politically, economically, institutionally, and in spaces from the global, to the international, regional, national, and local. We also invite manuscripts that deal with ideas and movements that are working to overcome cruelty and injustice and build coalitions that aim for a less cruel and more compassionate world. Owing to both the urgency of this topic, and the ‘all hands on deck’ approach GSQ outlined in its introductory editorial for the journal’s launch, we welcome submissions using quantitative and computational methods using large-N datasets, historical studies utilizing formal theory, interpretive and genealogical methods, and case studies, ethnographic research, and participant observations.
