ISA-Midwest St. Louis 2020: Call for Proposals

The International Studies Association-Midwest invites proposals for papers, panels, and roundtables on any subjects related to international studies, broadly defined, for its annual meeting. The conference is scheduled to be held on November 20th-22nd at the Hilton at the Ballpark, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

To help us best serve our members, we would appreciate if you could fill out a brief survey today to help us plan for the conference this fall.

ISA-Midwest President Baris Kesgin, the current board members, and I are all mindful of the uncertainty and challenges posed by the current Covid-19 pandemic. With your help via the survey, we will make an informed decision about whether to hold the conference as planned in person, or to move it to an online format. The survey will be open for one week.

The deadline for paper and panel submissions for the ISA-Midwest conference is Friday, July 24th. All proposal submissions must be made through the ISA submission software. ISA membership is not required for either proposal submission or conference attendance, though you will need to create an account with if you do not already have one. Faculty members attending the conference may be asked to serve as chairs and/or discussants. Please make sure to indicate your areas of expertise when submitting your proposal. We have added a box to check if you would like to participate virtually – entirely online – in this year’s conference as well.

This year’s conference will feature a talk by and a roundtable in honor of the 2020 Quincy Wright Distinguished Scholar, Dursun Peksen. Dr. Peksen is Professor of Political Science at The University of Memphis, and the recent recipient of The University of Memphis Alumni Association Distinguished Research, Creative Achievement & Excellence in Engaged Scholarship Award. We will also host Dr. Helen Milner, the President of the ISA, who will give a talk in the evening of Friday, November 23rd.

ISA-Midwest is home to many editors or associate editors of the ISA journals, senior and junior faculty, graduate and undergraduate students. In addition to receiving helpful feedback on research panels, the conference allows many opportunities (editors’ roundtable, panels on professional issues and skills) to interact with colleagues across the region and beyond. This year ISA-Midwest projects to continue its Emerging Scholars Forum and the Pay It Forward mentorship program. Senior graduate students and junior faculty are encouraged to apply when submitting paper proposals for the program. Similar to ISA's Junior Scholar Symposium, this is an invaluable opportunity to receive in-depth feedback from a senior scholar at a regional conference. The final composition of the panels will reflect the actual proposals received. The selection process is competitive, and final topics will depend upon the papers selected.
