ISA Nominating Committee Report 2015

After careful deliberation, the ISA Nominating Committee (Lisa Blaydes, David Capie, Mark Crescenzi, Robert Denemark, Scott Gartner, Deborah Larson, Nanette Levinson, TJ Pempel, and Norrin Ripsman) unanimously agree on a single slate of candidates for ISA officers:  T.V. Paul for president; Kumiko Haba (Aoyama Gakuin University/Japan), Kelly Kadera, and Layna Mosley, for vice presidents.  We also solicited nominees for at-large representatives from outside the recognized ISA regions.  We recommend the following five candidates to stand in the election for our three positions:  Mely Caballero-Anthony (Nanyang Technological University/Singapore), Han Dorussen (Essex, UK), Markus Kornprobst (Diplomatic Academy/Austria), Sergey Sevastianov (Far Eastern Federal University/Russia), and Ann Towns (Gothenburg/Sweden).

All nominees for executive positions were re-contacted this week and agreed to serve.  At-large nominees agreed to stand for election at the time of their nominations, and again by e-mail shortly afterwards.  Those nominees who were chosen, and those who were not, were informed of their status today.

The procedures followed were generally the same as in previous years.  We met at the ISA conference and prepared our timetable and procedures.  Calls for nominations, due June 15, 2014, were distributed to the membership.  This year we also e-mailed former at-large representatives, as well as workshop chairs, requesting nominations for at-large positions.  ISA HQ facilitated additional calls via other social media.  Nomination packets were to include a letter in support, a CV, and a statement of willingness to serve (in contradistinction to previous years when that statement was solicited after the nomination).  We suggest that statements of willingness to serve continue to be solicited at the start, and that we drop the requirement that individuals be contacted after nominations are received.  We made tentative decisions via conference call on July 8, 2014, and codified those decisions in separate communications with those who could not participate at that time.

We had five nominations for president, six nominations for vice president, and eleven for at-large representatives.  The committee had multiple strong candidates for each position. We are pleased with the final slate of candidates and believe they will serve ISA well in their capacities as officers and representatives of the association.

This report was prepared by Robert Denemark, acting as the chair of the ISA Nominating Committee (members include Lisa Blaydes, David Capie, Mark Crescenzi, Robert Denemark, Scott Gartner, Deborah Larson, Nanette Levinson, TJ Pempel, and Norrin Ripsman). The report was submitted July 11, 2014 for the 2015 Governing Council meeting in New Orleans.
