University of Notre Dame

Join us for the 8th Annual Summer Institute for Faculty, a one week program for university and college faculty and administrators who would like to develop a new peace studies program, or take their existing peace studies courses and program to the next level of design and rigor.  Since its inception the Summer Institute has 250+ attendees from 70 different institutions.

Your Hosts

The University of Notre Dame’s Kroc Institute, a leading center for interdisciplinary peace research and peace studies education, and the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), in Washington, D.C., share a commitment to the flourishing of the field, the strengthening of peace studies programs, and the training of those who teach — or wish to teach — peace studies.

Director and Staff

The Summer Institute is directed by George A. Lopez, an internationally recognized authority on peace studies program development, former Vice President of USIP  and Hesburgh Professor of Peace Studies Emeritus at Notre Dame. The Summer Institute is staffed by a dozen faculty and staff from the Kroc Institute and USIP.

Participants will engage with leading thinkers about the contemporary parameters of peace studies practice, research, and teaching; explore the pedagogical, administrative, and public relations challenges of peace studies; collaborate with their team (ideally 3 faculty from the same campus) on course development and programming; and experience the online courses and instruction available from USIP’s Global Campus.

The Summer Institute begins early afternoon, Monday, June 13, and ends at noon on Friday, June 17. Mornings will feature plenary sessions and workshops on critical themes in the field and program development. Afternoon sessions will allow participants to work with their team on campus plans.

$200 per participant (ideally each team should include 3 faculty members from a single institution). Participants are responsible for the cost of transportation to Notre Dame and lodging (dorms and other low-cost alternatives are available). The Kroc Institute covers breakfast, dinner, snacks, and all program materials.

The Summer Institute registration form is now available at Final Applications will be due on March 31, 2016.  Early Decision Deadline February 29, 2016.  Questions should be directed to George A. Lopez, Summer Institute Director,  or Anne Riordan .
