The International Studies Association Southern Region is happy to announce its 2021 annual conference, to be held October 8–9 in Atlanta, GA. The theme of this year’s meeting is "Global Politics after COVID". As this call goes out, we are still very much in the midst of a pandemic that has contributed to political, economic, and social turbulence globally. The pandemic has tested the limits of multilateralism, raised questions about the role of the great powers, and has exposed injustice and inequities in economic and societal systems at all levels. As the world emerges from COVID, what are the greatest challenges and how are we managing them? To what extent has the pandemic created new opportunities to address enduring challenges? Can we expect power dynamics to change and, if so, what are the implications? These are just some of the questions papers and panels might consider. We encourage paper, panel, and roundtable submissions related to the theme, though we welcome proposals on any topic related to international studies. ISA-South seeks to showcase the work of junior and senior scholars as well as students. Submissions from those in academia, government, non-governmental organizations, the armed forces, and other entities are all strongly encouraged.
Paper proposals must include an abstract of less than 200 words. Panel proposals must include 4-5 papers and at least one discussant. Roundtable proposals required between 3 and 10 participants, and a 200 word abstract illustrating the roundtable’s aims and expected outcomes.
Panel, roundtable, and individual paper proposals must be submitted via the ISA website. Although an ISA account is needed to access the system, you do not need to be a member of the International Studies Association to submit proposals or attend the conference.
This year we also invite proposals for innovative panels. We welcome panel proposals that push beyond the typical panel format and encourage participants to interact and learn in new, creative ways. The selection process will take into account the quality, feasibility, and cost of each proposal. For a description of ISA’s innovative panels please visit https://www.isanet.org/Conferences/Special-Convention-Programs/Innovative-Panels#
The region would like to extend a special invitation to student participants.
