The International Studies Association-Midwest is pleased to invite you to submit proposals for papers, panels, roundtables, and workshops on any subjects related to international studies, broadly defined, for its annual meeting. We are also delighted to announce that the conference will be held in-person; we will meet from November 19-21 at the Hilton at the Ballpark, St. Louis, Missouri, USA. The deadline for paper and panel submissions for the ISA-Midwest conference is Friday, July 30th.
All proposal submissions must be made through the ISA submission software. An ISA membership is not required for either proposal submission or conference attendance, though you will need to create an account with isanet.org if you do not already have one. Faculty members attending the conference may be asked to serve as chairs and/or discussants. Please make sure to indicate your areas of expertise when submitting your proposal.
This year’s conference will feature a talk by, and a roundtable in honor of, the 2021 Quincy Wright Distinguished Scholar, Richard W. Mansbach. Dr. Mansbach is Professor of Political Science at Iowa State University. We will also host our Reception & Plenary Session on the evening of Friday, November 19th.
ISA-Midwest is home to many editors or associate editors of the ISA journals, senior and junior faculty, graduate and undergraduate students. In addition to receiving helpful feedback on research panels, the conference allows many other opportunities (editors’ roundtable, panels on professional issues and skills) to interact with colleagues across the region and beyond. For more information, please visit our conference website.
This year, ISA-Midwest will continue its Emerging Scholars Forum and the Pay It Forward mentorship program. Senior graduate students and junior faculty are encouraged to apply when submitting paper proposals for the program. Similar to ISA's Junior Scholar Symposium, this is an invaluable opportunity to receive in-depth feedback from a senior scholar at a regional conference. The final composition of the panels will reflect the proposals received. The selection process is competitive, and final topics will depend upon the papers selected.
Pay It Forward (PIF) is mentoring program designed for female identifying graduate students and junior faculty within the International Studies profession.
The mini-PIF workshop will include an invitation-only lunch and a mentoring cafe, where mentees will be matched with a mentor to discuss issues facing women in the profession. Topics addressed typically include navigating a gendered profession, work-life balance, applying and interviewing for jobs, and promotion and tenure. In addition to these meetings, ISA-Midwest is going to feature various other professional development panels, roundtables, and opportunities for participants.
Participation is limited to 9-12 mentees. Preference is given to individuals who have not previously participated in a PIF event. Interested participants should utilize this form.
Questions about the program can be directed to Dr. Leah Windsor (firstname.lastname@example.org). Submissions must be received by July 30, 2021. Each mentee will receive a paid lunch (valued up to $25 USD) and a stipend (up to $100 USD), which is to be paid towards the costs for travel.
This application is separate than your conference proposal. Please submit your proposals to the conference through the ISA webpage before the deadline and follow the above instructions for the PIF workshop. While participants need not be presenting at the ISA-Midwest, they will have to register for the conference.
