Money Services

Payment Options
The official currency of Ghana is the Ghana Cedi (GHC). All cash payments are made in GHC. Also, cash payments are preferred for most services. The banks offer forex bureau services for those who wish to exchange currencies.

ATMs
Visa and Mastercard services are available. Most ATMs offer these services. The ATMs on campus are mostly situated at the banking square which is 20 minutes’ walk from the conference venue. The banks are:

Shai Hills and Accra City Tours

You will be picked up from your hotel at 7:00am and depart to Shai Hills Resource Reserve with a drive distance of approximate 1h 37min (67.5 km) for 1 hour safari. This reserve is an attractive region of hilly rocks and grassy plains. You will have a drive safari through the forest, which will take you to an old ancestral cave where the Shai people dwelled in some time past. Beside the ancestral cave, you will encounter mammals like olive baboons, bushbucks, kobs, green monkeys if you are a keen bird watcher look out for some birds like violet Turaco, Paradise Flycatcher, Green Turaco Red-billed Hornbill, Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird, Red-necked Buzzard where you will observe many species of birds.

Latest by 11am, you should depart from Shai Hills Resource Reserve back to Accra.

Upon your return to Accra, you will visit the W. E. B. Dubois Center for Pan African Culture, where Dr. Dubois (an academic and civil rights champion) spent two years working on a Pan-African encyclopedia under the invitation Dr. Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana’s first President). There, you will be treated to a guided tour through Dr. DuBois’ research library.

Afterwards you will visit James Town fishing community.

You will also make a stop at Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum which was created to commemorate Ghana's founding father.

Continue your trip to the Arts Center – a large arts and crafts market where you can find handicrafts from all over Ghana and West Africa. Be prepared to use your bargaining skills as you browse the many artisan stalls.

Have lunch at a local restaurant.

You will end your tour with a visit to the Teshie Nungua Craft Shops to see casket (Coffin) made to suit the vocation/profession of the deceased. The casket of a deceased fisherman will be curved like a fish. Afterwards, you will visit a restaurant to have dinner and continue to the airport to depart home.

You will end your tour with a visit to the Teshie Nungua Craft Shops to see casket (Coffin) made to suit the vocation/profession of the deceased. Over 100 years-old, Accra has a blend of colonial and contemporary architecture which symbolizes the cultural mix of the city.

Dubois Center for Pan African Culture, where Dr. Dubois (an academic and civil rights champion) spent two years working on a Pan-African encyclopedia under the invitation Dr. Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana’s first President). Visit to Trashy Bags Factory. Trashy Bags is a project that makes recycled eco-friendly bags and gifts from plastic rubbish. You will learn about the process involved from collection of discarded plastic sachets, how they are washed and made into beautiful bags and the benefits to the local communities.

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel at 8:00am, and depart to the Eastern Region of Ghana to explore the following;

Start your journey with a detour to Aburi with a travel distance from Accra approximately 1h 10 mins (33.3 km) and go visit Aburi Botanical Gardens for a hiking. The cool mountainous weather of Aburi makes it a destination for people who love the cool side of life. The garden covers a total land area of about one hundred and sixty (160) acres. However, it is only three (3) acres that have been developed and the remaining serving as a botanical reserve.

After which you continue journey to Global Mamas Bead Factory in Odumasi Krobo in the Eastern region [with a drive distance of approximately 1h 20mins (43.2 km)] which is widely known as the main region producing traditional glass beads. In Ghana beads are considered to be a form of jewellery and objects for adornment and they are used by nearly all the ethnic groups in Ghana.

Global Mamas Bead Factory, you will take a quick tour of the factory which takes about 30 minutes to see how Glass Beads are made from recycled glass bottles. These Beads are delicately, artistically created with powdered glass not painted.

You will also visit a small gift shop that displays very nice beads for sale, as well as bracelets, earrings and necklaces. Absolutely no pressure to buy!

If you can, come along with empty glass bottles to donate, especially blue and red colored glass. It will be well appreciated.

You will also be treated with a guided walking tour to interact with locals at Elmina fishing harbor and explore the colonial architecture and the wall of the former slave castle (Elmina Castle).

Visit to a tropical rainforest at Kakum National Park one of West Africa's surviving tropical rain forests, for a canopy walkway, which is made up of seven bridges extending 330m, hanging 30m above the forest floor. Challenge yourself by going on the canopy walk.

Getting Around

From the Airport

Participants can use Uber or Taxify, the ride-sharing application, private taxis or the airport taxis. For the airport taxis, the fare depends on the driver but the current average cost is around 50 Ghana cedis. Uber and Taxify have an average cost of 30 Ghana cedis.

Around Town

Uber and Taxify are available but their coverage does not extend beyond Greater Accra region. There are also taxis available, but the fare depends on the driver and the distance to the destination.

Uber and Taxify, take cash as well as electronic forms of payment. The local taxis only take cash as a form of payment.

Visa Information

If you require a letter of invitation to support a visa application, please be sure to provide sufficient lead time for the processing of the letter. The organizers request that these participants register early. A letter of guarantee will be sent from the conference organizers upon providing a receipt of the paid conference registration fee and of a hotel accommodation in Accra.
