ISA Annual Convention 2016, Atlanta

Exploring Peace
ISA's 57th Annual Convention
March 16th - 19th, 2016, Atlanta, Georgia
Headquarters Hotel: Hilton Atlanta

ISA 2016 in Atlanta is now in the rear view mirror, and it is time for a little reflection. ISA is made of 29 sections, 4 caucuses, and 6 regional organizations. There is a tendency sometimes for members to think of ISA as merely a collection of these groups and their own membership identity in terms of these entities. As a result, we forget what we have in common and how dialogue across different research topics, methodologies, and theoretical orientations is a core element of ISA. Accordingly, it was heartening that the Atlanta meetings, centered on the theme "Exploring Peace," proved to be a forum for such interaction. There were 272 theme panels drawn from most ISA sections and often co-sponsored by multiple sections. Highly successful programs such as the Junior Scholar Symposium included peace-related sessions and provided opportunities for junior and senior scholars to come together. I would again like to thank program co-chairs Amanda Murdie and Cooper Drury for their excellent work in putting together the program for the Atlanta conference. As ISA now has almost 7,000 members from 121 countries, we must not forget our shared interests and missions, even as the association grows more diverse on a host of dimensions.

- Paul F. Diehl, Outgoing ISA President (2015-2016)
