ISA Publications

The Association sponsors five journals of the highest quality in international relations. International Studies Quarterly (ISQ) started in conjunction with the Association as its flagship journal. The International Studies Review (ISR) is critically acclaimed for its synthesis of theory and literature, and its broad interdisciplinary and multinational perspective on the field. International Studies Perspectives (ISP) focuses on teaching, policy application, and controversies in the field. Foreign Policy Analysis provides a peer-reviewed outlet for the highest quality academic research into the processes, outcomes and theories of foreign policy. And finally, just this year, International Political Sociology debuted as an interdisciplinary journal responding to the diversification of both scholarly interests and regional concerns in contemporary international studies. With these journals and our new quarterly electronic newsletter ISA strives to bring you the latest news about the field and its practitioners. The combined circulation of our journals (both individual and institutional subscribers) is worldwide in scope (world circulation map PDF file) and has seen significant increases, particularly in online access (online access PDF file), over the last decade.

Our publisher, Blackwell, is one of the world's leading academic publishers. With 923 staff members in offices in the US, UK, Australia, Japan, Denmark, and Germany, Blackwell publishes over 700 journals in partnership with more than 550 academic and professional societies.

International Studies Quarterly (ISQ)

Isqcover

International Studies Quarterly, the official journal of the International Studies Association, seeks to acquaint a broad audience of readers with the best work being done in the variety of intellectual traditions included under the rubric of international studies. Therefore, the editors welcome all submissions addressing this community's theoretical, empirical, and normative concerns.  First preference will continue to be given to articles that address and contribute to important disciplinary and interdisciplinary questions and controversies.  As part of an ongoing movement toward concerns over community access to data employed in empirical enquiries, and the related possibilities for replication and cumulation, the editors will require authors whose articles are accepted for publication to ensure that their data are fully accessible.  Authors of quantitative empirical articles must make their data available for replication purposes. A statement of how that is done must appear in the first footnote of the article. Required material would include all data, specialized computer programs, program recodes, and an explanatory file describing what is included and how to reproduce the published results. ISQ is published four times a year for the International Studies Association by Blackwell Publishing.

Note to our contributors: The ISQ will not be processing new submissions in August, but we will be accepting reviews and making decisions on manuscripts already received. You may submit your manuscript during August if you wish, but it will not be processed in September 1, at the earliest. Confirmations and responses to e-mail queries may be a bit slower than usual during this period as the staff will be on break during part of this time.

Publication: 4 times yearly.

Electronic submissions can now be made through our website.

International Studies Review (ISR)

Isrcover

The International Studies Review provides a window on current trends and research in the field of international studies. In it, scholars, educators, and policymakers can find pertinent information about new books in international studies as well as analytic reviews of recent trends and controversies in scholarship around the world. Published four time a year, the Review will help: (a) scholars engage in the kind of dialogue and debate that will shape the field of international studies in the future; (b) graduate and undergraduate students understand the major issues in international studies and identify promising opportunities for research; and (c) educators keep up with new ideas and research.

Contents

The Review contains four distinct sections.

Reflection, Evaluation, and Integration: The heart of each issue is made up of two or three extended essays that synthesize scholarship, clarify debates, pose new perspectives on existing research, identify new directions in the field, or provide insight into scholarship in various parts of the world.

Reviews of Books: As many as 20 short pieces review single books or sets of two or three related books that have been published within the past year.

Featured Book Reviews: Each issue also contains three or four extended reviews of books. These will be books that have been published outside the United Sates and written in languages other than English, or books that make a particularly important contribution to the field, wherever they are published.

The Forum: A goal of the Review is to stimulate lively dialogue and debate about the nature of and future directions for international studies. The Forum provides an outlet for debates over concepts, theories, current research, or even about reviews that have been published in the International Studies Review itself.

Focus

The focus of the International Studies Review is on books and research dealing with international institutions and the foreign policies, international interactions, and international relationships of such political actors as national governments, subnational groups, and international governmental and nongovernmental organizations.

At the same time, the Review is committed to engaging the entire international studies community in a creative dialogue. Over time the essay and book reviews will give attention to such diverse topics as security studies, international regime theory, international trade and finance, comparative studies, development studies, feminist international theory, peace studies, foreign policy analysis, international organizations, international communication, intelligence studies, international law, environmental studies, as well as various types of research methodologies.

International Studies Perspectives (ISP)

Ispcover

International Studies Perspectives (ISP) publishes articles that bridge the interests of researchers, teachers, and practitioners working within any and all subfields of international studies. The journal is devoted to four types of contribution:

  • Policy research and commentary: Articles in this category are addressed to current or recent policy debates, highlight the degree to which these debates are (or should be) informed by existing scholarly literature and contemporary research, and are directed to an audience consisting of both academics and practitioners.
  • Pedagogical analyses:  Colleges and universities around the world have placed renewed emphasis on innovative teaching methods in the field of international studies, and ISP provides an outlet for high quality pedagogical analysis.  Active learning approaches, curriculum development, multimedia methods, and other topics have been discussed in the journal's pages.
  • Visions of the discipline:  These contributions offer insights into current trends in international studies, including developments in fields other than political science, and controversial debates in the discipline.  Articles in this category also seek to connect such trends and debates to developments in policy research and pedagogy.
  • Pieces of interest to the international studies profession:  Articles on the profession deal with such topics as publishing in international studies, the job market, and professional development.  This section also includes sometimes humorous (but always insightful) "pieces on our craft."

Editorial Policies:  Manuscripts accepted for review will be examined by two or more active scholars qualified to provide editorial input to ISP, in addition to review by at least one member of the editorial team.  The editors are responsible for all final decisions on the publication of manuscripts.

Publication: 4 times yearly.

Original manuscripts that fall within the mission of ISP outlined above should be sent to:

Foreign Policy Analysis (FPA)

Fpacover

Foreign Policy Analysis provides a peer-reviewed outlet for the highest quality academic research into the processes, outcomes and theories of foreign policy. Reflecting the diverse, comparative and multidisciplinary nature of the field, Foreign Policy Analysis provides an open forum for research publication that enhances the communication of concepts and ideas across theoretic, methodological, geographical and disciplinary boundaries. By emphasizing accessibility of content for scholars of all perspectives and approaches in the editorial and review process, Foreign Policy Analysis serves as a source for efforts at theoretical and methodological integration and deepening the conceptual debates throughout this rich and complex research tradition.

Foreign policy analysis, as a field of study, is characterized by its actor-specific focus. The underlying, often implicit argument is that the source of international politics and change in international politics is human beings, acting individually or in groups. In the simplest terms, foreign policy analysis is the study of process, effects, causes or outputs of foreign policy decision-making in either a comparative or case-specific manner.

Foreign Policy Analysis is distributed to all members of the International Studies Association, as well as several thousand institutional and library subscribers. As a result, the review guidelines are intended not only to insure the highest quality in the research published, but also to provide value to such a large and diverse audience. Authors are asked to insure that their articles are written to be accessible to all researchers in international studies. Submissions are open to all and all submissions will be evaluated on the quality of their content with the additional consideration of broad accessibility.

Electronic submissions are preferred. Current submission details are available here and questions can be directed to any member of the editorial team.

International Political Sociology (IPS)

Ipscover

International Political Sociology (IPS), responds to the need for more productive collaboration among political sociologists, international relations specialists and sociopolitical theorists. It is especially concerned with challenges arising from contemporary transformations of social, political, and global orders given the statist forms of traditional sociologies and the marginalization of social processes in many approaches to international relations. IPS is committed to theoretical innovation, new modes of empirical research and the geographical and cultural diversification of research beyond the usual circuits of European and North-American scholarship.

Instructions for authors

Manuscripts will be accepted for review on the understanding that their content is original and that the manuscript has not been accepted  for publication or review elsewhere. Manuscripts that fall within the aims and scope of IPS or clearly related to international political sociology must be sent electronically to BOTH didier.bigo@libertysecurity.org and ips@ceri-sciences-po.org.  They should not exceed 10,000 words and should be sent in two files (preferably Word of PDF files). One file should be sent ready for double blind peer review: author shall have removed all self-references and all characteristic that may identify him or her (name, affiliation, title of conference if paper presented in a conference..). The other file should contain the manuscript with all necessary information. Both files should contain a short abstract of the article. Once received, the articles will be sent to relevant outside experts and scholars for a double anonymous peer review.  All new items are published on a space available basis and decisions made on publication are the discretion of the editors of IPS.
