This award recognizes the best paper presented at a panel or poster session by a graduate student at the ISA Annual Convention. Students matriculated in a graduate program (masters or doctorate) are eligible. Submissions must focus on at least one of the three principal areas of concern to the ENMISA Section: ethnicity, nationalism, and/or migration.
ABOUT THE AWARD:
- The Martin O. Heisler Graduate Student Paper Competition is open to any student who is enrolled in a graduate degree program (masters or doctoral) at the time of the annual ISA conference.
- To be eligible for the competition, the student should have attended the 2010 ISA annual meeting and presented his/her paper as a member of a panel or poster session.
- The content of the paper must be related to at least one of the three main focus areas of ENMISA–ethnicity, nationalism and migration.
- Two prizes may be awarded: Grand Prize-1st place –$200.00 and First Runner-Up– $100.00. The winners will be announced at the next ENMISA business meeting. In addition, the first place winner will receive a one year paid membership in ISA and the ENMISA section. (Note: The Selection Committee reserves the right to decide not to award prizes if there are not a sufficient number of papers submitted for consideration or if the committee decides that the submitted papers are not deserving of the awards.)
- The Coordinator of the Heisler Award competition is responsible for forming a committee to decide on the awarding of the prizes. He/she will try to ensure that the committee membership is representative of scholars working in the three main focus areas of ENMISA–ethnicity, nationalism and migration.
- The criteria for judging the papers include mastery of the field, originality, logic, organization, and documentation. ENMISA encourages not only the submission of dissertation related research, but also outstanding seminar papers. We emphasize original "think-pieces" and research rather than assessments of the literature.
- Students who wish to enter the competition may submit papers and their contact information on or before November 1, 2010 to the Heisler Award Competition Coordinator, Dr. Stephen Deets, sdeets@babson.edu . Other members of the award committee are Mike Lebson and Peter Trumbore.

- The First Place recipient is Tristan James Mabry (PhD Candidate, Department of Political Science- University of Pennsylvania) for the paper "Laitin on Language ". The recipient will receive a one-year paid membership in ISA and the ENMISA section and an award of $200.00.
- The Second Place recipient is Omar McDoom (London School of Economics) for his paper "Why Men Kill: The Microfoundations of Ethnic Radicalization and Extremism: Insights from Rwanda" The second place award carries with it a $100.00 prize.
