Security for the Future
The theme for this year’s conference is future-oriented analyses of global security conditions and responses. We are particularly interested in novel approaches to understanding present and emerging global challenges, unique analytical perspectives, new information syntheses, original insights on the use of history in anticipating future developments, and linkages between knowledge production and policy problem-solving.
We seek to foster substantive interdisciplinarity and methodological eclecticism. Presentations of research utilizing historical, qualitative, quantitative, and formal methods are equally welcome. We encourage proposals for full panels defined in terms of research design and discipline as well as substantive topic.
We invite proposals for papers and panels that address broad questions, such as:
- What will be the most important future sources of threats to global, regional or local order?
- What are the emerging security consequences of economic, social, environmental and informational globalization?
- What new forms of security governance may develop (planned or unplanned) in response to evolving security challenges?
- How did past policymakers, scholars, and analysts think about the future, and what lessons do those efforts offer today?
Papers and panels may also address specific topics such as:
- Non-proliferation and arms control in all weapons categories
- Security engagement, dialog and cooperation (in specific national/regional contexts, on specific issue-areas, and at global levels)
- National defense and deterrence capabilities, and other forms of threat perception, response and consequence management
- New and emerging threat dimensions, such as cyberwarfare and biological weapons
- Policy-relevant scientific and technological innovations and developments (e.g. experimental findings, systems tests, etc.)
- Security-related developments worldwide, particularly in key policy-challenging regions and countries
- New policy challenges or solutions
- Security-relevant interactions between military/security and civil/commercial sectors
- Historical analyses relevant to contemporary or future concerns
- Research utilizing foreign sources or indigenous contributions
Proposals for panels and papers on other topics are also welcome. Early submissions and proposals for complete panels are especially encouraged.
This conference is a good venue for papers and panels aiming to generate discussion and garner feedback for ongoing research projects. The conference is also an excellent opportunity for graduate students to present papers and organize panels. The best student paper presented at the conference will be considered for the annual ISSS Best Graduate Paper Award. In addition, Ph.D. students interested in submitting their dissertations for the annual ISAC dissertation award will find this conference a useful venue for presenting and getting feedback on their work.
