2012 International Ethics Book Award Winner Announced
Bronwyn Leebaw, Judging State Sponsored Violence, Imagining Political Change (Cambridge:
Cambridge University Press, 2011) is an insightful, rich and well-written analysis of transitional
justice. Leebaw integrates literature from law, philosophy, and psychology. The award committee judged this book
outstanding for three reasons. First it is a clear description and dissection of the assumptions
underlying the dominant approaches of transitional justice. Second, she explores the promise
and pitfalls of the dominant approaches in several examples, most notably the Nuremberg
Trials and South Africa transitional Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Third, proposing to move beyond what she calls the "Manichean logic" of victim and perpetrator, Leebaw shows the importance of the structural injustices and the limits on agency in a context where atrocity
occurred.
