IPS Announces New Awards

The International Political Sociology Section of ISA (IPS) announces the debut of two new awards designed to promote research and recognize outstanding scholars. The IPS Graduate student Paper Award is designed to recognize the best graduate student paper presented at the previous year’s convention in an IPS (co-)sponsored panel. If you would like to nominate a paper, please visit the IPS website.  The deadline is June 15, 2012. The IPS Book Award is selected for its outstanding contribution to international political sociology, whether in the form of theoretical development, empirical analysis, or both. Single- and multi-authored monographs published (i.e., with copyright dates) in the previous two calendar years are eligible for the award. For further information, please visit the IPS website. The deadline for submissions is June 15, 2012 (for books published in 2011 and 2012).

CFN: The Kenneth E. Boulding Award

The Peace Studies Section of ISA invites nominations for the 2012 Boulding Award.  The award was established to honor Kenneth E. Boulding, a founder of the field of Peace Studies. The Award Committee seeks a graduate student research paper, delivered at the most recent ISA meetings, that is (a) theoretically based, (b) empirical (qualitative and/or quantitative), and (c) relevant to a significant problem in the field of peace studies. Any excellent exploration in the area of Peace Research is eligible. Direct submissions from graduate students and nominations from panel chairs and discussants are welcome. The award recipient will receive a two-year membership in the ISA (including peace studies section), a cash award of $250.00 (USD), a travel grant of up to $300 (USD) to attend next year's convention and a certificate to be awarded at the convention. A cash award of $50.00 (USD) will be awarded to the runner-up. Nominations are due to the chair of the award committee by May 30, 2012. Please see the award website for more information.

Call for Nominations: ISSS Distinguished Scholar Award

The International Security Studies Section of ISA invites nominations for the Distinguished Scholar Award. The award is given for life achievement in International Security Studies. Typically, nominees will have made major contributions to scholarship in the field both via their own research and writing and their mentorship of others. The nomination may come from any member of the International Security Studies Section. Nominations should be accompanied by a short letter of justification (not more than 1 page) and the nominee’s CV. The award recipient will be honored at a special panel at the ISA conference in San Francisco in April 2013. The award includes a plaque and a $500 award which will be distributed at a reception following the panel. The nomination may be sent to the chair of the committee, Gale Mattox. IPE Best Graduate Student Paper Award

The International Studies Association's International Political Economy Section seeks to recognize the best (sole authored) graduate paper presented at the previous (2011) ISA annual convention. To be eligible for the award, the paper must be presented on a panel sponsored or co-sponsored by the IPE section, and must be original (not published at the time of its presentation). Papers presented as posters are also eligible. Papers may be nominated by panel chairs/discussants or other conference participants, and by authors. Please email the nomination letter and the paper to the Graduate Student Paper Awards committee by November 30, 2011. The committee chair can be contacted at: hartj@indiana.edu. The winner will be announced at the IPE section meeting in San Diego in April 2012 and will receive a framed certificate and check for $100.

ISA Call for Nominations: ISSS Governing Council

Nominations are invited for elections to the Governing Council of the International Security Studies Section (ISSS) of the International Studies Association. Members of this council assume the broad responsibility of assisting in the governance of the section. We welcome nominations from all regions of the world. It is desirable to have diversity on the governing council across categories that include race, ethnicity, and gender.  It is also desirable to have diversity across professional pursuits including academia, think tanks, NGOs, and government organizations. This year a total of four members will be elected to the Governing Council for a three-year term. At least one of these should be a graduate student elected to the designated student representative position. Nominees must be members of the section at the time of the election. Nominations should be sent to issselections@hotmail.com and must be received by November 23, 2012.

CFP: CISS/Keynote 2012 Conference

The program chair of the Joint CISS/Keynote Conference invites paper and panel proposals on the theme Between the Global and the Local: Actors, Institutions and Processes. This international conference will take place June 24 - 26, 2012 in Prague. The conference seeks to address key dimensions of the interplay between the global stage and local in the context of the unique and, in many respects, unprecedented challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. CFP: Protecting Human Rights: Duties and Responsibilities of States and Non-state Actors

The Steering Committee of the APSA Human Rights Section, the Council of the IPSA Human Rights Research Committee, and the Executive Council of the ISA Human Rights Section announce the call for papers for the second joint conference on the theme “Protecting Human Rights: Duties and Responsibilities of States and Non-state Actors” to take place on 18-19 June 2012 at the University of Glasgow in Glasgow, Scotland, hosted by the Glasgow Human Rights Network. This conference is timed to coincide with the joint ISA-BISA conference to be held immediately after in Edinburgh (20-22 June). Proposals should be submitted via the MyISA system by 1 November 2011. Alexander George Graduate Student Paper Competition 2012

Graduate students are invited to participate in the 2012 Alexander George Graduate Student Paper Competition sponsored by the Foreign Policy Analysis Section of the ISA. The award was established in 1990 to recognize an outstanding graduate student paper presented on a Foreign Policy Analysis Section panel at the ISA Annual Convention, regional meetings or ISA-sponsored international meetings. Papers that are eligible for the 2012 award must have been presented at or after the Montreal meeting. Papers that are co-authored by a faculty member are not typically eligible for consideration. To enter the competition, please e-mail a copy of your paper (in MS Word or PDF format) by no later than September 1, 2011 to the Chair of the Alexander George Award Committee, Trevor Rubenzer (trubenzer@uscupstate.edu). The other Committee members are Amy Below and Jarrod Hayes. There is the potential for multiple awards based on the quality and number of papers received. Upcoming Award Deadline: SWIPE Mentor Award

The International Political Economy Section of ISA invites nominations for the SWIPE Mentor Award recognizing excellent mentoring in the field of international political economy. The Society for Women in International Political Economy (SWIPE) created the award in 1997 to pay tribute to women and men who have invested in the professional success of women in the IPE field. Recipients have included scholars, an academic press editor, and deans. In 2009, with the view that many of its original goals had been reached and that other organizations were addressing its concerns, SWIPE disbanded. The award is now administered by the International Political Economy Section of ISA. Nominations must include the nominee's current c.v. and a letter (no more than 2 pages) describing how the nominee has mentored women in IPE. Nominations may come from any member of ISA and should be sent by e-mail to the Committee Chair, Kathleen J. Hancock at khancock@mines.edu. The deadline for nominations is July 15, 2011. Call for Nominations: ISSS Best Graduate Student Paper Competition

Nominations are being accepted for the International Security Studies Section (ISSS) best graduate student paper award. Papers presented at the March 2011 ISA conference and the ISSS/ISAC conference (to be held in Irvine, CA in October 2011) are eligible for submission. Nominations (with an e-copy of the paper) normally come from faculty supervisors and mentors as well as panel chairs or discussants at the above mentioned conferences and should include a one paragraph justification.
