Foreign Policy-Related Junior Faculty Book Grants

The Smith Richardson Foundation’s International Security and Foreign Policy Program is pleased to announce its annual grant competition to support junior faculty research on American foreign policy, international relations, international security, military policy, and diplomatic and military history.  The Foundation will award at least three research grants of $60,000 each to support tenure-track junior faculty engaged in the research and writing of a scholarly book on an issue or topic of interest to the policy community.

These grants are intended to buy-out up to one year of teaching time and to underwrite research costs (including research assistance and travel).  Each grant will be paid directly to, and should be administered by, the academic institution at which the junior faculty member works.  Projects in military and diplomatic history are especially encouraged.  Group or collaborative projects will not be considered. The deadline for submission is June 30, 2010, and the results will be announced by October 31, 2010. CfA: UN Summer Study Program

The United Nations Intensive Summer Study Program will be offered from Monday, July 26 to Friday, July 30, 2010, by the John C. Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University and the United Nations Association of the USA.  Designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, this unique program immerses participants in the political dynamics of the United Nations. CfA: Freeman Foundation Summer Institute

The Japan Studies Association (JSA ) will be conducting its 8th Freeman Foundation Summer Institute on Japan from May 23-June 11th, 2010 for college teachers who have no prior background on Japan. The 3-week Institute is held in Honolulu, HI. The program covers up to $600 airfare, plus accommodations and most meals. More information is available on the JSA website, click on the 2010 Freeman Summer Institute. The deadline for applying is February 1st.

Princeton-Harvard China and the World Program

Princeton University and Harvard University jointly founded the fellowship program for the advanced study of China’s international relations, the Princeton-Harvard China and the World Program (CWP), in 2005. The China and the World Program supports research that integrates theoretical innovations in the field of international relations with the rigorous study of China’s interactions with countries, regions, institutions, and non-state actors. In 2010-2011, the program will award several one-year “postdoctoral research associate” positions. Preference will be given to scholars who have defended their dissertations in the past few years and are currently working on revising their Ph.D. thesis for publication as a book or who are just beginning a second major project. To apply, please submit online a cover letter, a CV, a project description, and writing samples, and contact information for two recommendations via using the online system. CfA: Summer Research Program for Undergraduates

The Department of Political Science at Oklahoma State University invites applications for the sixth annual Democracy, Interdependence and World Politics Summer Research Program for undergraduates. This program presents a valuable opportunity for undergraduate students to conduct faculty–mentored research projects. Supported by summer stipends of $4,000, research funds, travel funds, and intensive mentoring, students will formulate and carry out a research project work in one of the program’s issue areas: Foreign Policy in a Democracy; Interdependence and Foreign Policy; Democratization and Democracy Promotion; and Interdependence, Democracy and Conflict. Successful applicants will spend about 9 weeks at Oklahoma State (June – July) during the summer of 2010, where they will work with a team of faculty members and visiting scholars to develop research questions and design and complete projects. All application material is located on the Oklahoma State University Department of Political Science website. Please note that NSF rules require participants to be US citizens or permanent residents. The application deadline is February 15, 2010.

CfA: Mellon Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in Contemporary History

The George Washington University’s Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (IERES) is pleased to announce a call for applications for the Mellon Pre-doctoral Fellowship in Contemporary History for 2010-2011. Applicants need to have completed archival research for their dissertation in two or more countries and be at the final writing stage of their dissertation. The Fellow must be in residence at IERES from September 2010 through June 2011 and will be provided with an office and computer. The Fellow will also help the IERES Director administer several workshops that train Ph.D. candidates to conduct archival research. The award will offer support in the amount of $25,000 per year, plus benefits. Deadline for all fellowship applications is January 18, 2010. For more information, please see the IERES website.

CfA: Summer Institute on Conducting Archival Research

Ph.D. students from any discipline working on dissertations involving archival research (particularly in relatively newly accessible archives) are invited to apply to participate in the 8th annual Summer Institute on Conducting Archival Research (SICAR) at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C., June 7-11, 2010. SICAR trains graduate students to get the most out of their time conducting research in archives. The deadline for applications is February 25, 2010.
