CFA: Academic Fellows Terrorism Studies Program

The Foundation for the Defense of Democracies is accepting applications for its annual Academic Fellows Terrorism studies program. This unique program provides university professors with a detailed understanding of the terror threat facing democracies. The program is a 10-day course taught in conjunction with Tel Aviv University and takes place entirely in Israel and runs May 27th to June 6th, 2012 (travel inclusive). Participants interact with academics, diplomats, military and intelligence officials, and politicians from Israel, Jordan, India and the United States. They also visit military bases, border zones and other security installations to learn the practical side of deterring terrorist attacks. All expenses are paid by FDD. CFA: 2012 Summer Freeman Foundation Workshop

The Japan Studies Association announces an academic workshop taking place from May 20 to June 9, 2012.  The 2012 Freeman Summer Institute on Japan is funded by the generosity of the Freeman Foundation and will occur at Hawaii Tokai International College, a 15 minute walk from Waikiki, with easy access by foot or bus to the University of Hawaii at Manoa and the the city of Honolulu. Most expenses are covered by the Freeman Foundation, although each institution is expected to provide a modest $600 program fee. The workshop aims to provide knowledge about Japan that faculty can use in classroom instruction at their colleges and universities. The workshop offers a great chance learn about Japan as a whole and to enhance your understanding of Japanese history, economy, culture, arts and other aspects of Japan and its people. CFA: Summer Institute in Political Psychology

Applications are being accepted now for the 20th Annual Summer Institute in Political Psychology (SIPP), to be held at Stanford University July 15 to August 4, 2012. SIPP was founded in 1991 at Ohio State University, and Stanford has hosted SIPP since 2005, with support from Stanford University and from the National Science Foundation. The Summer Institute offers three weeks of intensive training in political psychology.  Political psychology is an exciting and thriving field that explores the origins of political behavior and the causes of political events, with a special focus on the psychological mechanisms at work. In 2012, SIPP will accept up to 60 participants, including graduate students, faculty, professionals, and advanced undergraduates. CFA: Fulbright Scholar Program

Applications are now open for the Fulbright Scholar Program. The core Fulbright Scholar Program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad each year. Grantees lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields. The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Under a cooperative agreement with the Bureau, the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) assists in the administration of the Fulbright Scholar Program for faculty and professionals. Applications are available online and should be received by August 1, 2012.

CfA: Summer Seminar on the History & Philosophy of International Relations

The Institute of International Relations (IIR) at Panteion University of Athens announces its annual Summer Seminar on the History & Philosophy of International Relations. The seminar will be held on the island of Tinos, Greece, from July 3 to July 8. The seminar provides a forum for high quality academic work and provides opportunities for the creation and consolidation of scholarly professional networks. CFP: Exeter Centre for Ethno-Political Studies’ Workshop

The organizers invite proposals for a workshop on "Conflict, Peace and the Production of Knowledge" to be held at the University of Exeter, 19-20 June 2012. The purpose of this workshop is to explore how knowledge relating to ethnic and/or national conflict and its regulation is produced. Abstracts are welcome on any aspect of knowledge production in conflict-affected regions. As the workshop seeks to examine knowledge production both within and beyond academia, abstracts focusing on non-academic sites of knowledge production by either academics and/or practitioners are also welcome. Participants’ travel and accommodation will be paid for by the workshop organizers. Please note that drafts of papers should be circulated to fellow participants six weeks before the workshop in order to generate substantive discussion and feedback during the workshop. Final drafts will be expected three months from the workshop and will be published as an edited volume. Interested participants should send abstracts by 2 February 2012. CFA: Democracy, Interdependence and World Politics Summer Research Program

In Summer 2012, the Department of Political Science at Texas Christian University will host the sixth annual Democracy, Interdependence and World Politics Summer Research Program for undergraduates. This program presents a valuable opportunity for undergraduate students to conduct faculty–mentored research projects. Supported by summer stipends, travel funds, and intensive mentoring, students will formulate and carry out a research project work in one of several self-selected issue areas: Foreign Policy in a Democracy; Interdependence and Foreign Policy; Democratization and Democracy Promotion; and Interdependence, Democracy and Conflict. Successful applicants will spend about 8 weeks at TCU in Fort Worth, Texas (June 3-July 27) during the summer of 2012, where they will work with a team of faculty members and visiting scholars to develop research questions and design and complete projects within the issue-areas just noted. Fellowship: East-West Center

The East-West Center is now accepting applications from scholars and analysts who wish to undertake policy-relevant research and writing in Washington, D.C., in two programs. The Japan Studies Fellowship supports scholars and analysts from both the United States and Japan to conduct research on key issues of relevance to the US-Japan partnership, including diplomatic, politico-security, economic, social and international fields. Applicants specializing on Japan’s economy or US-Japan collaborative economic ties are encouraged to apply. Please see the website for more information.

The Asia Studies Fellowship supports scholars and analysts who wish to undertake policy-relevant research and writing in one of the following areas: 1) international relations in Asia; 2) political and economic change in Asia; 3) U.S.-Asia relations; and/or 4) ASEAN integration and community-building efforts. CFA: Summer Institute on Conducting Archival Research

The George Washington University’s Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (IERES) announces the 10th annual Summer Institute on Conducting Archival Research (SICAR). This prestigious five-day seminar will be held in Washington, D.C., from 21-25 May, 2012. SICAR trains graduate students from multiple disciplines to maximize their research in archives. Ph.D students from the US and abroad working on international relations and modern history are encouraged to apply. George Washington University will provide accommodation and meals during the week of the Institute and accepted students may apply for subsidized travel.
