ISA January Newsletter

ISA's E-Newsletter for January 2013 has been sent to members. In this edition we provide an update on the status of our hotel space for the upcoming Annual Convention in San Francisco. As you know, we offer discounted room rates at several hotels for our participants and we recently partnered with the Hyatt as an overflow option now that our two host-hotels are mostly full. This edition of the newsletter also provides an update from many of our ISA Sections offering timely reports on award winners, officer elections, and plans for Section meetings at the Annual Convention. The ISA-West 2012 Conference Report

The ISA-West Annual Conference 2012, “Climate Change and Human Security,” was held in Pasadena, California from Oct. 19-20th. Over these two days, 126 people participated on 23 panels and 9 roundtables. Highlights included the luncheon talk on climate change by Josh Busby (UT-Austin), a documentary on climate change by Miroslav Nincic (UC-Davis), and a talk on globalization and the wine industry by Mike Veseth (University of Puget Sound), accompanied by a wine tasting at a local wine bar.  The conference featured four roundtables related to professional development, two of which were supported by a Professional Development Committee grant: “Navigating the Mentor-Mentee Relationship,” “Navigating Departmental and Campus Politics,” “Walking the Walk: Human Rights Activists in the Field,” and “Teaching Insights by Award-Winning Teachers.” We look forward to seeing everyone again in Pasadena in September 2013!

Early Registration Ending for ISA 2013

This is a reminder that the early registration period for the ISA's 2013 Annual Convention will end on November 18, 2012. The late registration period begins on November 19th. A complete list of our registration rates is found on the convention website here. Our 2013 Annual Convention will convene in San Francisco, April 3-6, at the Hilton Union Square and Parc 55 Wyndham, to consider the theme The Politics of International Diffusion: Regional and Global Dimensions. First Global South International Studies Conference

You are cordially invited by the Global South Caucus of ISA to join us virtually on November 29-December 1 for the First Global South International Studies Conference. The conference will be streaming live on the internet. Under the direction of Program Chair Imad Mansour, a dedicated team of Sciences Po–Menton students will receive questions and transmit them to our participants. There is a special website set up for the conference and you are welcome to follow the conference on Twitter. Technology will allow us to communicate with scholars particularly in the Global South.

ISA Officer Election Underway

It is time to elect new officers for ISA, including the President, Vice Presidents and Non-North American representatives to ISA's Governing Council. Please see this year’s report from the Nominating Committee here. The election will be conducted online and ballots are being e-mailed to members today. If you did not receive a ballot and would like to request one, please contact ISA (isa@isanet.org). Ballots are due by December 5th. Election results will be posted on this blog as well as published in the ISA Newsletter.

Call for Editors: International Interactions

The journal International Interactions announces a call for editors. The term of the editorial team based at the University of Illinois, led by Professor Paul Diehl, will be coming to an end in 2014. The ISA Publications Committee is therefore calling for proposals from individuals or teams to succeed Prof. Diehl and his Illinois colleagues as editor(s). Only those with university positions and access to university resources should apply. The ISA Publications Committee will evaluate all applications, and make its recommendation regarding a new editor (or editorial team) to the Executive Committee in late January 2013. The International Studies Association will provide a subvention to the Editor(s) of approximately $30,000 annually to support the editorial project. Applications should be submitted to Brian M. Pollins, ISA Publications Committee Chair, in electronic form only, at pollins.1@osu.edu, by November 30, 2012. For more information, please see the full call here.
