Association for Israel Studies International Conference

The proposal submission deadline for the 29th Annual Conference of the Association for Israel Studies, to be held at the University of California, Los Angeles, June 24-26 2013 has been extended to January 20, 2013. The Program Committee invites scholars conducting research on any aspect of Israel studies to submit proposals for individual papers, organized panels and roundtable discussions. Of special interest are proposals relating to the conference theme, "Israel in the International Arena: Scholarship, Imagery, Discourse and Public Policy." Kenyon Mellon Post-doctoral Fellowship

Kenyon College seeks applicants for the Kenyon Mellon Post-doctoral Fellowship in International Studies. The post-doctoral program is a one-year teaching fellowship in the humanities or humanistic social sciences for holders of PhD's who come from under-represented and disadvantaged backgrounds. The program seeks to attract recent recipients of doctoral degrees whose research focus is in international fields of study, including comparative or cross-cultural scholarship. The fellowship program places its greater emphasis on the Fellow's teaching while encouraging mentorship of junior faculty, as well as allowing time for research activities. The Fellow will be expected to teach three courses over the term of the year, including one course that incorporates the teaching of writing as practiced in the disciplinary field(s) of the Fellow. Other potential and desirable course offerings include a course on qualitative methods and a class designed for first year students as an introduction to global exploration and engagement. Chinese Government Special Scholarship-Postgraduate Program

The international “China’s Politics and Economy” MA program of the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU) is pleased to announce that applications for “Chinese Government Special Scholarship-Postgraduate Program,” which provide a tuition waiver, stipend, and other benefits for full -time graduate (MA, Ph.D.) study at SJTU are now open.  Preference is given to students having exchange arrangements with SIPA or SJTU as well as American students from well-regarded overseas universities.  For information about the two-year SJTU SIPA “China’s Politics and Economy” MA program, please contact Ms. Peng JingJing at sjtu-china-program@gmx.net. CFP: Journal of Strategic Security

The Journal of Strategic Security (JSS) – a publication of Henley-Putnam University – seeks manuscripts for an upcoming issue on addressing preparedness, response, and resilience in the face of security threats facing the general population, critical infrastructures, and key resources. Threats can emanate from a wide-range of sources, including foreign terrorist groups, "homegrown" violent extremists, insiders, and even lone wolf actors.  The diversity of threat sources requires a critical examination of how traditional threat assessment and risk management strategies are evolving to create new best practices for integrating law enforcement and community awareness to identify, prepare, and respond to dangers. Government, the private sector, and the public all have a role to play to ensure that communities – and nations – are prepared to respond to man-made threats and natural disasters.  This issue seeks creative approaches to preparedness and response in nations and communities in way that deters threats, mitigates vulnerabilities, and builds resiliency against future threats. Collaborative Research Center Newsletter

The Collaborative Research Center 700 announces the publication of the current edition of SFB 700 Newsletter. In this edition, the Center presents recent developments at the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 700 "Governance in Areas of Limited Statehood" and Center researchers share the results of their field research. The newsletter also includes a policy brief on the Mérida Initiative, a security cooperation agreement between the United States and Mexico. The second and final newsletter of 2012 has been released and can be downloaded here. The Center, sponsored by the German Research Foundation and based at the Free University of Berlin, is devoted to the analysis of governance under conditions of limited state authority. Edward R. Murrow Press Fellowship

Launched in 1949 with support from the Carnegie Corporation, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) Edward R. Murrow Press Fellowship seeks to promote the quality of responsible and discerning journalism that exemplified the work of Edward R. Murrow. In 1965, the program was renamed in his honor and is supported by the CBS Foundation and Ford Foundation. One CFR resident fellowship is awarded each year to a distinguished foreign correspondent or editor. The Edward R. Murrow Press Fellow spends nine months full time in residence at CFR’s headquarters in New York. The program enables the fellow to engage in sustained analysis and writing, expand his or her intellectual and professional horizons, and extensively participate in CFR’s active program of meetings and events. The program awards a stipend of $65,000 as well as a modest travel grant. The fellow is considered an independent contractor rather than an employee of CFR, and is not eligible for employment benefits, including health insurance. The program is only open to applicants who have distinguished credentials in the field of journalism and who have covered international news as a working journalist for print, broadcast, or online media widely available in the United States. Applicants are limited to those individuals who are authorized to work in the United States and who will continue to be authorized for the duration of the fellowship. CFR does not sponsor for visas.  Interested candidates who meet the program’s eligibility requirements may apply online between January 1 and March 1, 2013.
