CFR 2013-2014 Stanton Nuclear Security Fellowship

The Stanton Nuclear Security Fellowship (SNSF) Program, made possible by a generous grant from the Stanton Foundation, offers younger scholars studying nuclear security issues the opportunity to spend a period of twelve months at the Council on Foreign Relations’ (CFR) offices in New York or Washington, DC, conducting policy-relevant research. The SNSF Program seeks to stimulate the development of the next generation of thought leaders in nuclear security. Applications for the 2013-2014 program are now being accepted. Qualified candidates must be junior (non-tenured) faculty, post-doctoral fellows, or pre-doctoral candidates from any discipline who are working on a nuclear security related issue. The program is only open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are eligible to work in the United States. CFR does not sponsor for visas. The duration of the fellowship is twelve months, preferably beginning in September. The program awards a stipend of $100,000 for junior (non-tenured) faculty; $75,000 for post-doctoral; and $50,000 for pre-doctoral fellows. Payment will be made in twelve equal monthly installments. Fellows are considered independent contractors rather than employees of CFR, and are not eligible for employment benefits, including health insurance. Interested candidates who meet the program’s eligibility requirements must submit an application form, a cover letter, a CV, and a proposal outlining the work proposed to conduct. Each applicant should arrange to have two letters of recommendation sent assessing the policy relevance of the applicant’s proposed project as well as the applicant’s qualifications for carrying it out. CFA: International Policy Summer Institute

IPSI announces the opening of applications for the 2013 International Policy Summer Institute (IPSI), the third annual weeklong professional development program held in Washington, D.C. for professors (all ranks) and post-docs in the field of international affairs interested in strengthening the relationship between scholars of international relations and the broader foreign policy community. IPSI, which is part of the overall Bridging the Gap Program co-sponsored by American University, UC Berkeley and Duke University with support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, has had great success in its first two years. The intensive curriculum includes sessions with U.S. government officials, policy journal editors, think tanks, media training, other academics engaged in policy relevant work, and other activities. The core goal is to teach participants how to develop and articulate their research for a policy audience, what policy-makers are looking for when they look to IR scholarship, whom to target when sharing research, and which tools and avenues of dissemination are effective and appropriate. The Institute also provides a forum for scholars to develop professional networks with their colleagues and with the broader policy community. Applications are due on January 16, 2013 at 5pm. CFP: Annual MPSA Conference

The Midwest Political Science Association has informed us that there is still time for graduate students who may be interested in presenting at the 71st Annual MPSA Conference, April 11-14, 2013. Chicago, IL. The deadline for proposals for paper presentations was in October, but the deadline for poster presentations is at the end of this month. Discussants and panel chairs are also needed. You may submit your proposal online by November 30, 2012.

Annual Convention Hotels Update

The Parc 55 Wyndham has informed us that they are now accepting room reservations for the 2013 Annual Convention in San Francisco. The Parc 55 is a host hotel for the convention, along with the Hilton Union Square. We have scheduled panel meetings in both hotels and you will find them conveniently located (map) very near to each other. They are offering discounted room rates ($176 Single, $206 Double) and you may make your room reservation using their customized site here. The cutoff date for our group rate is March 9, 2013. CFP: German Studies Association Annual Conference

The German Studies Association (GSA) will hold its Thirty-Seventh Annual Conference in Denver, Colorado, October 3-6, 2013. The Program Committee invites proposals on any aspect of German, Austrian, or Swiss studies, including (but not limited to) history, Germanistik, film, art history, political science, anthropology, musicology, religious studies, sociology, and cultural studies. Proposals for entire sessions and for interdisciplinary presentations are encouraged.  Individual paper proposals and offers to serve as session moderators or commentators are also welcome. ALL proposals must be submitted online; paper forms are not used.  The deadline for proposals is February 15, 2013. Presenters must be members of the Association. ISA Officer Election Underway

It is time to elect new officers for ISA, including the President, Vice Presidents and Non-North American representatives to ISA's Governing Council. Please see this year’s report from the Nominating Committee here. The election will be conducted online and ballots are being e-mailed to members today. If you did not receive a ballot and would like to request one, please contact ISA (isa@isanet.org). Ballots are due by December 5th. Election results will be posted on this blog as well as published in the ISA Newsletter.

CFP: BISA Annual Conference 2013

The organizers invite paper and panel proposals for the British International Studies Association (BISA) Annual Conference 2013 to be held at Brindley Place, Birmingham, UK, on the 20th & 21st of June. Proposals are invited on the conference theme: Beyond the Ivory Tower: IR and the Real World. The conference will consider a variety of research topics. How much impact do international studies have on the real world? Do scholars have a responsibility to address policy and political concerns? The “impact” agenda, promoted by the UK research councils and assessed in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, presupposes that scholars can and should make a difference beyond the ivory tower. The organizers invite participants to consider the ethical, methodological, and practical issues raised by the new emphasis on impact in academic research, and the implications for international studies. To encourage debate on the conference theme, BISA will sponsor a plenary panel of leading scholars in the field (to be announced shortly). Proposals should be submitted by December 3, 2012. CFP: Economic Sociology and Sociology of Economic Thought

The organizers invite proposals for a workshop on Economic Sociology and Sociology of Economic Thought to be held at the University of Jena, 23th–24th May 2013. The aim of this workshop is to assess and understand the impact of the crisis for economics (including the importance of economics for making the crisis possible), the contours and limits of economics and its scientific outlook. For this workshop, contributions are invited from all social sciences that pursue this question (broadly defined) and help us to understand the limits, contours and current changes of economic thought in this time of world economic crisis.
