ISA-NE Conference Is On

Amid concerns about Hurricane Sandy, Samuel Barkin, ISA-NE Program Chair 2012, has just notified us that the region's annual conference (scheduled for Nov. 2-3 in Baltimore, MD) will go on as planned:

The ISA-NE conference in Baltimore will be going ahead as planned. If you will not be able to attend the conference, please notify both me and your fellow panelists as soon as possible. Since some people will undoubtedly not be able to attend, we may need to be a little flexible in making some panels work. If you are a discussant on a panel and will not be able to make it to the conference, please consider alternative mechanisms for delivering comments, such as sending comments that can be read in your absence. Please let me know if you have questions or concerns, at isa-ne2012@isanet.org. Thanks, and I hope to see you there.

CFP: Journal of Strategic Security

The Journal of Strategic Security (JSS), a publication of Henley-Putnam University, seeks manuscripts for an upcoming issue focusing on targeted violence. In the early 1990s Robert Fein and Bryan Vossekuil coined the term "targeted violence" to refer to "situations in which an identifiable (or potentially identifiable) perpetrator poses (or may pose) a threat of violence to a particular individual or group" (Fein, Vossekuil, & Holden, 1995, p. 2). Contributions might address issues such as interviewing strategies, innovative protective intelligence systems or analytic methods, detailed and systematic case studies, recent trends, public perceptions, and international comparisons, or they might focus on a particular form of targeted violence or characteristics of the perpetrators and their pre-attack behaviors. The Journal welcomes creative approaches to addressing the strategic impact of targeted violence, and looks forward to receiving submissions by the November 1, 2012 deadline. CFA: APSA MENA Workshop

The American Political Science Association (APSA) is now accepting proposals from political scientists interested in serving as co-leaders for the inaugural APSA MENA Workshop, which will take place in August 2013 in partnership with the American University in Cairo. The MENA Workshops are a multi-year collaboration with early career political science faculty in the Arab Middle East and North Africa to enhance regional scholarly capacity and networks. Leadership teams will be composed of senior researchers from the MENA region and their colleagues from the US and Europe. Together, co-leaders will serve as academic directors of the two-week event and will be responsible for all substantive content. Full details are available online. CFP: Global Conversations Journal

Global Conversations Journal, a new International Relations Journal founded by students at the London School of Economics, is seeking to publish the outstanding work of young scholars in IR. This includes the work of both undergraduate and graduate students. Both broad theoretical papers (in the style of Foreign Affairs) and specific research papers will be welcomed. The journal will not adopt a predetermined theoretical stance ( be it neorealist, post structuralist etc. ) but will rather seek to promote a global inter-paradigm debate. CFP: 8th Annual AGS Graduate Student Conference

The American Graduate School in Paris invites submissions for its 8th Annual AGS Graduate Student Conference. This year’s theme is “Identity and Gender Politics within International Relations.” The conference will be held April 18-19, 2013 at the American Graduate School in Paris. The aim of the conference is to analyze the impact of identity and gender—often conditioned by class, race, biology and sexuality—within the social and cultural framework of International Relations. Commonalities and intersections between these areas, as well as their impact on interstate and state governance, international conflict, and public awareness should be a main concern of conference contributors. ISA-NE Early Registration Ending

Early registration for the ISA-NE 2012 Annual Conference ends tonight at midnight Pacific Time. Registration is taking place online via the MyISA system. The conference will be held 2-3 November 2012 at the Tremont Plaza Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland. The conference will address a wide variety of topics including international relations theory, international law and organizations, foreign policy, globalization, human rights, international development, conflict resolution, military/strategic studies, the environment, feminist theory/gender studies, and international political economy. International Affairs Fellowship in Nuclear Security

The International Affairs Fellowship in Nuclear Security (IAF-NS), sponsored by the Stanton Foundation, offers university-based scholars valuable hands-on experience in the nuclear security policymaking field and places selected fellows in U.S. government positions or international organizations for a period of twelve months to work with practitioners. The IAF-NS is only open to faculty members with tenure or on tenure-track lines at accredited universities and who propose to conduct policy-relevant research on nuclear security issues. Qualified candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are eligible to work in the United States and be between the ages of twenty-nine and forty. CFR does not sponsor for visas. The program awards a stipend of $125,000. The deadline to apply is November 1, 2012. Please see the fellowship website for more information.

ISA-Midwest Registration Deadline Extended

The ISA Midwest Annual Conference 2012 will take place Nov. 1-4, at the Hilton at the Ballpark in St. Louis, MO. The pre-registration deadline has been extended to noon Wednesday, October 24, 2012.  Please see the conference website for more information.

CFP: ASEN 2013 Conference, Nationalism and Revolution

The Association for Studies in Ethnicity and Nationalism (ASEN) is pleased to announce the call for papers for the 23rd ASEN Annual Conference: Nationalism and Revolution. The conference will take place from the 9-11th April, 2013 at the London School of Economics. All the information on the Call for Papers is available online and you can submit your abstract here. Abstracts are accepted until November 30, 2012.

Call for Nominations: William M. LeoGrande Prize

The School of Public Affairs and the Center for Latin American and Latino Studies at American University are pleased to announce the establishment of the William M. LeoGrande Prize for the best book on U.S.-Latin American relations. This $1,000 prize will be awarded annually to the author or editor of a book published in Spanish, English or Portuguese during the preceding two years.  Prizewinners also will be funded to take part in a public presentation and discussion of the book in Washington DC.  Nominations for the 2012 award will be accepted until November 15, 2012. Nominations must include one copy of the book and a letter of no more than 750 words explaining its significance.  Any published reviews and/or copies of evaluations by peer reviewers may be submitted as supporting materials.  Please see the AWARD WEBSITE (PDF) for more information.
