CFN: Carl Beck Award

The award committee invites nominations for the Carl Beck Award. This award is presented on an annual basis to a graduate student for his or her paper in the field of International Studies. Carl Beck was aware that the field of international relations faced difficult new challenges. To respond to those challenges it must be adaptive and innovative, open to new ideas, perspectives and approaches. The Committee therefore looks for original papers that deal with traditional concerns in new and interesting ways or with emergent international conditions and problems. Nominations should be sent to the chair of the Carl Beck Award Committee by October 20, 2012. Please see the award website for more information.

Travel Grant Acceptance Notices Sent

Travel grant acceptance notices for the 2013 Annual Convention are being sent by ISA HQ today. The ISA travel grants program has been created to provide junior scholars, senior graduate students and scholars from low-income countries some assistance to enable them to attend conferences that would otherwise be out of reach for all but the better paid, senior faculty. Only ISA members may qualify for an ISA Annual Convention travel grant. Please see the travel grant website for more information.

ISSS-ISAC Registration Reminder

ISA's International Security Studies Section (ISSS) sends a reminder that online registration for the ISSS/ISAC Annual Conference 2012 closes at midnight on September 27, 2012. The conference theme is "Security Studies in Times of Transition." The conference will be hosted by the Triangle Institute for Security Studies (a consortium of Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State University) and will be held at the Friday Center, Chapel Hill, North Carolina,  4-6 October 2012. Out of town registrants will be lodged at the collocated Courtyard Marriott Hotel. For more information, please see the conference website.

Call for Editors: International Interactions

The journal International Interactions announces a call for editors. The term of the editorial team based at the University of Illinois, led by Professor Paul Diehl, will be coming to an end in 2014. The ISA Publications Committee is therefore calling for proposals from individuals or teams to succeed Prof. Diehl and his Illinois colleagues as editor(s). Only those with university positions and access to university resources should apply. The ISA Publications Committee will evaluate all applications, and make its recommendation regarding a new editor (or editorial team) to the Executive Committee in late January 2013. The International Studies Association will provide a subvention to the Editor(s) of approximately $30,000 annually to support the editorial project. Applications should be submitted to Brian M. Call for Nominations: Robert W. and Jessie Cox Award

Established in 1997, the International Studies Association Robert W. and Jessie Cox Award honors the best graduate student paper of critical inquiry into international relations. The purpose of the award is to encourage critical study of international political economy, world orders, and civilizations. Papers submitted should relate, broadly, to the main normative principles for which the Coxes stand, including: diffusion of power; democratization; mutual respect for distinct civilizations, concern for the biosphere; and, greater equality among societies, genders, and races. The winner will receive a $500.00 cash prize and a plaque at the awards presentations at the annual ISA conference in San Francisco in April 2013. Graduate students are invited to submit their papers for the competition themselves. In addition, department chairs, program directors, deans, chairs of sessions at ISA annual or regional meetings, or from chairs of sessions at other meetings of international studies associations are invited and encouraged to nominate submissions. ISA Working Groups 2013

Online registration for Working Groups will begin at 10am PST on Monday, September 24, 2012! The registration site will close at noon on Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012. Participants will be notified of their acceptance via email by mid-October 2011 and participants must commit to attending all three working group sessions. Beginning on September 24th, Working Group registration can be accessed on our Specialty Panels and Sessions website here.

Annual Convention Notifications

ISA headquarters sent out notification e-mails today to those who had submitted proposals for the 2013 Annual Convention in San Francisco. We are happy to report that we received many quality proposals and we are looking forward to an exciting and intellectually stimulating meeting. Thank you to everyone who submitted a proposal. Please contact the program chairs (isa2013@isanet.org) if you have any questions about your placement on the program. If you have been accepted to the program, please remember that you must register for the convention by October 17, 2012 or you will be dropped from the program. There is an automatic $20.00 discount for registrations made online through MyISA. The preliminary program is now online in MyISA. This is a dynamic program updated in real-time by the program chairs. We have also posted a PDF version of the program on ISA's public website (no login required) and it will be periodically updated. Finally, the Hilton has informed us that they are ready to accept room reservations at our discounted room rates, we have posted more information on the hotels page of the convention website. We look forward to seeing you in San Francisco!

Annual Convention Hotel Opens

The Hilton Union Square has informed us that they are now accepting room reservations for the 2013 Annual Convention in San Franciso. The Hilton is a host hotel for the convention, along with the Parc 55 Wyndham. We have scheduled panel meetings in both hotels and you will find them conveniently located (map) very near to each other. They are offering discounted room rates ($176 Single, $206 Double) and you may make your room reservation using their customized site here. The cutoff date for our group rate is March 3, 2013. When our room block at this hotel is full we will add the Parc 55 Wyndham, our co-host hotel. Hilton has put together this promotional video showcasing the Union Square:

Call for Nominations: IPE Section Best Dissertation Award

The International Studies Association's International Political Economy Section invites nominations for the IPE Section Best Dissertation Award. The Section seeks to recognize the best dissertation completed and accepted in the previous two years (2010-2012 for the 2013 award) in the field of international political economy. A ten page summary of the dissertation along with the nomination letter from the dissertation committee chair/member should be emailed to the IPE Dissertation Award Committee latest by October 1, 2012. The winner will be announced at the IPE section meeting in San Francisco in April 2013 and will receive a framed certificate and check for $100. Nominations are due by October 1, 2012. Fellowship: Georgetown University Post-Doctoral Fellowship

The Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar's Center for International and Regional Studies (CIRS) invites applications for the 2012-2013 post-doctoral fellowship. The fellowship will support a recent Ph.D. recipient in any discipline working on the Middle East.  Priority is given to projects with demonstrated relevance to the Persian Gulf. Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, a current curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation (including one from the chair of the dissertation committee), and a short synopsis of the Ph.D. dissertation. Also, candidates should provide a statement outlining the precise nature of the intended work during the period of the fellowship, the final product’s significance for the relevant literature, and when the completion of the project for publication may be expected. Application materials should be sent to cirspositions@georgetown.edu. Review of applications begin January 6, 2013.
