ISA-West Registration Reminder

ISA-West sends this quick reminder that the early registration deadline for the region annual meeting is fast approaching (September 1). Registering by the deadline allows you to register at a reduced rate. You may access the on-line registration through the ISA website.  This link will bring you to the MyISA page.  Please login to MyISA to pay for your conference registration and follow the instructions to guide you through the pre-registration process.  ISA membership is not required, but you will need to setup an account on the system in order to register. CFP: PSS-ISA Joint Conference, 2013, Budapest, Hungary

This is a reminder of the upcoming August 31st, 2012 deadline for proposals submissions to the Peace Science Society/ISA joint conference in Budapest, Hungary. The conference will be held at Corvinus University from June 27-29th, 2013. Proposals are being accepted through the MyISA system. This conference will explore the numerous security challenges states face today both domestically and globally and how these challenges influence interstate conflict, civil war, and peaceful conflict management practices. Three distinct phenomena form the backdrop of this conference: climate change, the global financial crisis, and the revolutionary awakening across the Middle East region. Each of these developments carries the potential to destabilize societies and cause widespread human suffering. More broadly, the conference seeks to engage dialogue on conflict and conflict management research to understand how states are responding to shifts in the global security environment. ASIL Midyear Meeting and Research Forum

ASIL’s Midyear Meeting kicks off in downtown Atlanta with a career and mentoring program, followed by the panel discussion (eligible for 1.5 CLE credit hours*) on the theme "When Transnational Business Deals Go Sour: The Challenges and Opportunities of International Arbitration" and a reception. The meeting will be held October 19-21, 2012 and starts in Atlanta and then moves to the University of Georgia School of Law in Athens. The meeting will include keynote addresses by United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and UN General Counsel Patricia O’Brien and U.S. State Department Legal Adviser Harold Hongju Koh as well as the Research Forum. The Research Forum will provide a setting for the presentation and focused discussion of more that 50 scholarly works-in-progress. Please see the Midyear Meeting website for more information. Call for Nominations: J. Ann Tickner Award

ISA invites nominations for the J. Ann Tickner Award. The award was established in 2011 to recognize J. Ann Tickner for her pathbreaking role within the International Studies Association and in the discipline of International Relations more generally. This award recognizes someone who, in Tickner’s footsteps, consistently combines bravery in pursuing high-quality, pioneering scholarship that pushes the boundaries of the discipline with a deep commitment to service, especially teaching and mentoring. Nominations must include a detailed letter of the nominee’s accomplishments generally and suitability for this award specifically, as well as an up-to-date curriculum vitae for the nominee. Nominations of women and other members of historically marginalized groups are especially welcome. The recipient will receive a $1000.00 (USD) check and a plaque to be presented at the 2013 ISA Annual Convention in San Francisco. Nominations should be received by October 15, 2012. Call for Nominations: Alexander George Graduate Student Paper Award

Graduate students are invited to participate in the 2013 Alexander George Graduate Student Paper Competition sponsored by the Foreign Policy Analysis Section of the ISA. The award was established in 1990 to recognize an outstanding graduate student paper presented on a Foreign Policy Analysis Section panel at the ISA Annual Convention, regional meetings or ISA-sponsored international meetings. Papers that are eligible for the 2013 award must have been presented at or after the 2012 ISA Annual Convention in San Diego. Papers that are co-authored by a faculty member are not typically eligible for consideration. To enter the competition, please e-mail a copy of your paper (in MS Word or PDF format) by no later than September 1, 2012 to the Chair of the Alexander George Award Committee, Jarrod Hayes. Please ensure “Alexander George Award” appears in the subject line of the email. The other Committee members are Klaus Brummer and James Scott. There is the potential for multiple awards based on the quality and number of papers received. Please feel free to contact the chair of the award committee with questions. CfP: Journal of Global Analysis

The Journal of Global Analysis invites submissions for upcoming editions. Journal of Global Analysis endeavors to become the foremost international forum for academics, researchers and policy makers to share their knowledge and experience in the disciplines of political science, international relations, economics, sociology, international law, political history, and human geography. The journal is an interdisciplinary refereed e-journal, edited by a group of international scholars indicated in the Editorial Board and International Advisory Board. The editors welcomes submissions of articles from related persons involved in the scope of the journal as well as summary reports of conferences and lecture series held in social sciences. Prospective authors should submit 4,000 - 15,000-word articles for consideration in Microsoft Word-compatible format. CFP: EU - 40 Years since the First Enlargement

The program chairs invite proposals for a converence devoted to the European Union to be held in London 7-8 March 2013. The conference theme is: 40 Years since the First Enlargement. 2013 is the 40th anniversary of the first enlargement of the European Union. To mark the occasion, UACES is organising a conference exploring the evolution of the integration project since the accession of the UK, Denmark and Ireland in 1973. The anniversary provides an opportunity to assess the impact of membership across these states and to advance the understanding of the contemporary conditions of European integration. The conference will involve a mixture of plenary addresses from leading political figures and five panels dedicated to assessing the impact of EU membership from a range of disciplinary perspectives. CFP: CISS/UNU-CRIS Joint Conference 2013

The program chair invites paper and panel proposals for the CISS/UNU-CRIS Joint Conference to be held in Bruges, Belgium from June 19 - 21, 2013. Proposals are invited on the conference theme "Cooperation, Integration, and Alliances: Regional and Global Perspectives, Challenges and Solutions." The interconnected world of the twenty first century is uniquely situated to explore integrative and cooperative policies and institutional structures to meet the variety of challenges that confront the international community. These issues span a wide range of economic, political, social and cultural dimensions. This conference proposes to engage in a discourse that analyses the magnitude of these challenges and suggest creative integrative responses. A cross professional and cross disciplinary approach will greatly enhance our understanding of global challenges and lead to effective solutions. Paper, panel, and roundtable proposals to engage in an interdisciplinary dialogue are invited from scholars, policy makers, and interested professionals. CFP: First Global South International Studies Conference

The conference chair invites paper and panel proposals for the the First Global South International Studies Conference to be held November 29-30 & December 1, 2012 at the campus of Sciences Po in Menton, France. The conference is co-sponsored by the International Studies Association’s Global South Caucus and the Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po). Proposals are invited on the conference theme "Sharing Insights and Ideas: Theorizing, Teaching, Research, and Publishing on the Global South." The conference will be devoted to developing theoretical ideas appropriate to studying the international relations and foreign policy of the global south as well as to sharing teaching, learning and publishing experiences and methods--perceived shortcomings as well as strengths—related to the study of the south by scholars/students from the north and south. Submit papers and/or panels to Imad Mansour, Conference Chair, by September 1st, 2012 (at the latest) at (imad.mansour@sciences-po.org). ISA Nominating Committee Report 2012

After careful deliberation, the International Studies Association Nominating Committee (Karen Alter, Scott Bennett, Martha Finnemore, Emilie Hafner-Burton, David Kinsella, Helen Milner, TJ Pempel, Bob Denemark, and Lisa Blaydes) unanimously agreed to a single slate of candidates for ISA officers: Amitav Acharya for president;  Cameron Thies, Carolyn Shaw, and Kristian Gleditsch for vice presidents. This year we also solicited (for the first time) nominees for at-large representatives from outside the recognized ISA regions. Our charge is to forward at least 5 candidates for three positions. We recommend the following 6 names be considered for the three at-large positions: Kurt Mills (UK); Olga Vorkunova (Russia); Toni Erskine (UK); Stephanie Rickard (UK); Mark Kayser (Germany); Thomas Hegghammer (Norway). We also solicited for the three-year position of treasurer. We recommend Cliff Morgan as treasurer. Candidate CVs are linked above and are available for download and review by ISA members prior to the election.
