CFA: Summer Institute on Conducting Archival Research

The George Washington University’s Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (IERES) announces the 10th annual Summer Institute on Conducting Archival Research (SICAR). This prestigious five-day seminar will be held in Washington, D.C., from 21-25 May, 2012. SICAR trains graduate students from multiple disciplines to maximize their research in archives. Ph.D students from the US and abroad working on international relations and modern history are encouraged to apply. George Washington University will provide accommodation and meals during the week of the Institute and accepted students may apply for subsidized travel. Fellowship: Cold War/Post-1945 International History

The George Washington University’s Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (IERES) is pleased to announce a call for applications for the Mellon Predoctoral Fellowship in Cold War/Post-1945 International History for 2012-2013. Applicants need to have completed archival research for their dissertation in two or more countries and be at the final writing stage of their dissertation. The Fellow must be in residence at IERES from September 2012 through June 2013 and will be provided with an office and computer. The Fellow will also help the IERES Director administer several workshops that train Ph.D. candidates to conduct archival research. The award will offer support in the amount of $25,000 per year, plus benefits. Deadline for all fellowship applications is January 15, 2012. Please see the institute website for more information.

CFP: Global Forecasting Research Project

Members of ISA have been invited to participate in a research project on predicting - or “forecasting” - global events, funded by Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA), and led by researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Martin Research and Consulting, and Draper Laboratory. The project is named SP♠DE: The System for Prediction, Aggregation, Display, and Elicitation. The SP♠DE forecasting system employs novel aggregation techniques with the goal of outperforming current forecasting models. The organizers hope to have over 1,000 participants in total, and are able to provide each with up to $575 in compensation. Please see the project website for additional details about the project.

CFP: The Use, Misuse and Abuse of Identity

The University of Aberdeen invites papers for Moving Forward 2012, the 9th Annual Postgraduate Conference of the College of Arts and Social Sciences, to be held 22 - 24 June 2012. The organizers will consider proposals on the theme: The Use, Misuse and Abuse of Identity. The conference intends to draw upon its tradition of interdisciplinary postgraduate dialogue to spark a series of conversations and considerations upon this ‘crisis’, and to reflect upon the use, misuse and abuse of identity within and without the academy. CFP: The Health and Wealth of US Capitalism: A Critical Condition?

The organizers invite proposals for a conference on The Health and Wealth of U.S. Capitalism: A Critical Condition? to be held at the Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3 University from June 14-15, 2012. The conference seeks to shed new light on the nature, vigor and viability of the U.S. economy and its related political economic paradigm. Proposals may be in English or French and should include a 300-word abstract and a short bio-bibliography. Proposals should be sent to cervepas@univ-paris3.fr by January 15, 2012. CFP: Public International Law and Foreign Affairs

Creighton University School of Law invites papers for the Public International Law and Foreign Affairs Conference to be held March 30-31, 2012 in Omaha, Nebraska. The conference is interdisciplinary in nature so as to fully understand the issues developing on the international stage. Proposals should be no more than a one-page abstract on a topic relating to the study of public international issues or private international issues directly affecting the public arena. The editors of Race/Ethnicity: Multidisciplinary Global Contexts invite papers for an upcoming issue on

CfA: Atlantis Transatlantic Degree Program in International Security and Development Policy

The Atlantis Transatlantic Degree Program in International Security and Development Policy is now accepting applications. The program is intended to prepare students to work effectively with security and development practitioners from Europe and the United States and to develop future practitioners who have a mutual understanding of European and American security and development paradigms.  This program is two years in length and results in two master’s degrees—one from a university in the United States and one from a university in Europe.  It involves post-graduate work at three universities—the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University in the US, the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, and the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University in The Hague. CfA: Caux Scholars Program

The Caux Scholars Program is now accepting applications for the 2012 summer program. The Caux Scholars Program July 1-29, 2012 will offer a learning experience in "Exploring Justice: Transitional, Restorative and Indigenous Applications" for young professionals and students ages 20-35. The program takes place in the historic Caux Center in Switzerland. Students have the opportunity to participate in the Caux Forum for Human Security, which draws leaders from politics, NGO’s, religion, the media and grassroots from over 60 countries to examine the relationship between governance, economics, climate change, environmental degradation, wounded memory and conflict.
