CFP: A Europe of Diversities

The Council for European Studies (CES) invites proposals for panels, roundtables, book discussions and individual papers for a conference on the theme A Europe of Diversities - 19th International Conference of Europeanists to be held in Boston, USA - March 22-24, 2012. They seek proposals in the widest range of disciplines, and particularly welcome panels that combine disciplines, nationalities, and generations.  The Conference Program Committee will accept only two submissions per person and members may only participate in a maximum of two sessions. Proposals must be received by 1 October 2011 and submitted through the website.

In Memoriam: James Rosenau

ISA mourns the recent passing of past-president James Rosenau. Dr. Rosenau was University Professor of International Affairs at the George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs and he served as President of ISA from 1984-1985. The following was contributed by his colleague James Mittleman:

Jim Rosenau shaped the ideas of generations of students, some of them now top policymakers. A superstar in the field of international relations, he explained the  complexity of global order. His landmark books show what makes a world of globalization hang together and how it is rapidly changing.
 
With great clarity and sensitivity for historical change, James Rosenau piloted the journey from international to globalization studies. This lens focuses on truly global issues: environment, crime, migration, and security. Deeply committed to democratic values, Rosenau’s top priority was teaching. He radiated a love of learning. His enthusiasm rippled through the classroom and his writings. Family, friends, and students alike salute this pillar of the knowledge community.

CFP: Journal of the Global Homeland Security Education Network

The Journal of the Global Homeland Security Education Network (JGHSEN) invites papers for the inaugural issue on the theme: Higher Education And Homeland Security: Since 9/11 And For The Next Decade. Manuscripts will be considered for publication that examine the developments in the academic provision of Homeland Security (HS) education.  It is anticipated that content for this inaugural issue of the JGHSEN will come from a broad array of subject areas; manuscripts will be submitted from many academic disciplines, from around the world. This special issue will represent innovative multi- and inter-disciplinary scholarship. HS practitioners and policymakers require the knowledge and abilities to confront HS threats that are characteristically transnational and multinational in nature, and require a corresponding effort to successfully confront them. Considering the contributions extending along the continuum of academia up through the doctoral level, a nation’s universities constitute a formidable resource in both basic and applied research areas for HS. Call for Nominations: Heisler Graduate Student Paper Award

The Ethnicity, Nationalism, and Migration Section (ENMISA) of ISA is seeking submissions for its 2012 Martin O. Heisler Graduate Student Paper Award. This award recognizes the best paper presented at a panel or poster session by a graduate student at the 2011 ISA Annual Convention in Montreal. Students matriculated in a graduate program (masters or doctorate) are eligible. Submissions must focus on at least one of the topics that are at the center of the ENMISA research agenda, such as ethnicity, citizenship, nationalism, religion and migration. Students who wish to enter the competition may submit papers and their contact information on or before October 1st, 2011 to the Heisler Award Competition Coordinator, Dr. Nukhet Sandal. Call for Nominations: The Susan Strange Award

ISA invites nominations for the Susan Strange Award. The award was established in 1998 to recognize Susan Strange for her unique and extraordinary role within the International Studies Association and the worldwide community of scholars. This award recognizes a person whose singular intellect, assertiveness, and insight most challenge conventional wisdom and intellectual and organizational complacency in the international studies community. The award is underwritten by Keesing's World News Archives. The recipient is jointly selected by the President of ISA in consultation with the incoming and outgoing Presidents. The recipient receives a plaque presented at the Annual Convention by the current President and the President-Elect. Nominations should be sent to by email to the President of ISA, Beth Simmons (bsimmons@wcfia.harvard.edu), by September 15, 2011.

CFP: Protecting Human Rights: Duties and Responsibilities of States and Non-state Actors

The Steering Committee of the APSA Human Rights Section, the Council of the IPSA Human Rights Research Committee, and the Executive Council of the ISA Human Rights Section announce the call for papers for the second joint conference on the theme “Protecting Human Rights: Duties and Responsibilities of States and Non-state Actors” to take place on 18-19 June 2012 at the University of Glasgow in Glasgow, Scotland, hosted by the Glasgow Human Rights Network. This conference is timed to coincide with the joint ISA-BISA conference to be held immediately after in Edinburgh (20-22 June). Proposals should be submitted via the MyISA system by 1 November 2011. Call for Nominations: ISSS Best Graduate Student Paper Competition

Nominations are being accepted for the International Security Studies Section (ISSS) best graduate student paper award. Papers presented at the March 2011 ISA conference and the ISSS/ISAC conference (to be held in Irvine, CA in October 2011) are eligible for submission. Nominations (with an e-copy of the paper) normally come from faculty supervisors and mentors as well as panel chairs or discussants at the above mentioned conferences and should include a one paragraph justification. CFP: Japan Studies Association Annual Meeting

The program chair invites proposals for the Eighteenth Annual Conference of the Japan Studies Association to be held at Hawaii Tokai International College in Honolulu from January 5-7, 2012. The conference occurs annually at various locations throughout the United States, inviting nationally and internationally prominent personalities to give presentations concerning Japan. In addition, refereed papers are presented by qualified JSA members in multiple sessions. Papers presented at the conference regularly appear in the Japan Studies Assocation Journal. Proposals may be submitted to Program Chair Cynthia Ho at the address shown on the online form. The deadline to submit proposals for individual papers or group sessions is October 10, 2011.
