Conference: ASMEA Annual Conference

The organizers invite attendance at the fourth annual conference of the Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa (ASMEA) to be held November 3-5, 2011 at the Key Bridge Marriott in Washington, D.C. The conference theme is: Out of the Past, Into the Future: Reflections on the Middle East and Africa. ASMEA is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that promotes the highest standards of academic research and teaching in the fields of Middle Eastern and African studies and related disciplines through programs, publications, and services that support its members and the international community of scholars and interested members of the public. CFA: Japanese Studies Fellowship Program

Applications are now being accepted for the Japanese Studies Fellowship Program. The program gives scholars, researchers, and professionals the opportunity to conduct research in Japan. Applicants must be American citizens, American citizens temporarily residing abroad, or permanent residents of the United States. Doctoral Candidates must have achieved ABD status by the time the fellowship begins. The application deadline is November 1, 2011. Applications must be submitted on-line. ISA Nominating Committee Report

ISA’s nominating committee completed its work on July 11th , and made the following nominations for the 2013-2014 leadership cycle:

CFP: Poverty and Policy in Uganda

The editors invite papers for a book collection on Poverty and Policy in Uganda: Governance Capacity and Policy Constraints. This collection will explore Uganda's capacity to address poverty through effective public policy. The book is targeted for academic and policy audiences, including audiences interested in the wider theoretical and practical application outside of the Uganda context as well as those with a more focused interest and stronger knowledge of Ugandan politics and public policy. Papers do not need to share a particular theoretical approach or set of assumptions; however papers individually need to be grounded in the wider research and debates informing their particular area focus. Papers need to relate to either some area connected to poverty in Uganda and/or policy capacity in Uganda addressing poverty. Theoretical models/approaches and methodology need to be clearly and systematically discussed in the submission. Deadline for abstract selection is October 1, 2011.  Please submit your 300-500 word abstract to both Andrea Brown and Nansozi Muwanga at Wilfrid Laurier University: abrown@wlu.ca and snansozi@hotmail.com. Editors will inform all authors whether their abstract is being considered for publication by November 1, 2011.

Upcoming Award Deadline: SWIPE Mentor Award

The International Political Economy Section of ISA invites nominations for the SWIPE Mentor Award recognizing excellent mentoring in the field of international political economy. The Society for Women in International Political Economy (SWIPE) created the award in 1997 to pay tribute to women and men who have invested in the professional success of women in the IPE field. Recipients have included scholars, an academic press editor, and deans. In 2009, with the view that many of its original goals had been reached and that other organizations were addressing its concerns, SWIPE disbanded. The award is now administered by the International Political Economy Section of ISA. Nominations must include the nominee's current c.v. and a letter (no more than 2 pages) describing how the nominee has mentored women in IPE. Nominations may come from any member of ISA and should be sent by e-mail to the Committee Chair, Kathleen J. Hancock at khancock@mines.edu. The deadline for nominations is July 15, 2011. CFP: Global Justice and Migration

The editors of Global Justice: Theory, Practice and Rhetoric, an online peer-reviewed journal published by the Global Justice Network invite articles for a special issue on global justice and migration. The special issue will focus on the contribution, or not, that migration makes to redistribution of wealth across borders, and it invites contributions from scholars and practitioners across all fields (e.g., political science, philosophy, sociology, economics, anthropology, etc.), whose research focuses broadly on this relationship.  The remit of the journal is explicitly inter-disciplinary and it sets out to bring together the theory and practice of issues related to global justice. Interested contributors are welcome to be in touch to submit contributions or to inquire about our interest in specific topics. Contributions should be between 4000-5000 words and will be accepted for consideration and review until October 1, 2011.  Publication is anticipated in March 2012.

CFP: Belgrade Security Forum

Several organizations from Belgrade, Serbia are organizing the Belgrade Security Forum this September which will gather several hundred top decision and policy makers as well as academics dealing with security in South East Europe. The Call for Papers for the academic part of the conference (Sept. 13-14) intended for young scholars (current and recent PhD students) is open until July 20, 2011. Successfull candidates will have travel and accomodation expenses fully covered. Detailed information about the CfP is available here.

CFP: ISA-West Annual Conference

The 2011 ISA-West Annual Meeting will be held September 23-24 at the Pasadena Hilton in the heart of Pasadena, California.  Paper, panel, and roundtable proposals are invited on any aspect of international studies, including those related to pedagogy within the discipline. The program chair especially welcomes proposals related to this year’s theme, The Individual and the International. The theme draws attention to the recent emphasis both in policy and in scholarship on individual agency in the international system. Please submit all paper, roundtable and panel proposals using the MyISA system via your MyISA account. Questions concerning the ISA-West 2011 Conference should be directed to Robert E.
