Association of Chinese Political Studies Annual Conference

The Association of Chinese Political Studies (ACPS) will hold an international symposium at King’s College-London, London, United Kingdom, from June 17 to June 19, 2011.  The theme of the conference, held in conjunction with the ACPS’s 24th annual meeting, is: 100 Years after the 1911 Chinese Revolution: Reflections and Forecasts.  The conference is hosted by King’s College and co-sponsored by King’s College, the Mr. & Mrs. S.H. Wong Foundation, and other contributors.  A formal Call for Papers is available on the ACPS website. Attending paper presenters who have paid their ACPS membership dues and conference registration fees in full will be entitled to two free nights of lodging and complimentary meals throughout the duration of the conference.  The best papers presented at the conference also will be considered for publication in edited volume of conference papers and the ACPS’s flagship journal The Journal of Chinese Political Science.

CFP: Simulation & Gaming

The editors invite papers for a special issue of Simulation & Gaming: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Theory, Practice and Research. This special issue will examine the various ways in which simulation and serious games can be used to enrich instructional curricula, train practitioners, promote conflict resolution, and generate theoretical and practical insight into processes of war-to-peace transition. We invite submissions from multiple disciplines, perspectives, and methodological or pedagogical approaches. Theoretical reflections, rigorous and critical evaluation of simulation exercises, literature reviews, and conceptual contributions are all welcomed. The topics that might be addressed could include preventive diplomacy; crisis management and de-escalation; conflict resolution; peace negotiations; counterinsurgency, stabilization, humanitarian intervention and peace operations; refugees; ethnic conflict; humanitarian operations; aid, budgetary planning, and post-conflict reconstruction; conflict-sensitive planning; interagency, civil-military, and coalition cooperation; human rights and election monitoring; media coverage, awareness and advocacy—among others. Interested authors are invited to submit by an abstract (not exceeding 500 words) of their proposed work for initial review, together with a brief CV on or before March 30, 2011. CFP: AGS Graduate Student Conference

The organizers invite paper proposals for the AGS Graduate Student Conference, to be held at the American Graduate School, Paris, France on May 26 & 27, 2011. The conference theme is: The Politics of Disaster: The Mitigation, Management and International response to Environmental Crises. The goal of this conference is to explore the myriad of historical responses, as well as the potential theoretical solutions to future crises.  The impacts of these crises are broad, as are the disciplines that explore their consequences.  The organizers seek a wide range of topics and faculties that will contribute to this discourse.  Topics may include, but are not limited to legal/ arbitrative responses, environmental/ ecological impacts, state and non-state relief efforts and the development movements present during these events. Abstracts and Papers may be submitted to conference@ags.edu.  Abstracts of 500 words will be accepted for consideration.  Please include the name of your advisor/professor, university affiliation and degree program with your abstract.  All participants will be required to submit a full paper by April 29th, 2011. CFP: Sixth MCTS Transatlantic Studies Conference

The organizers invite paper proposlas for the Sixth MCTS Transatlantic Studies Conference on the theme North and South: The United States, European Union, and the Developing World. The Conference will be hosted by the Instituto Franklin at the University of Alcala in Alcala, Spain, 20-22 October 2011. All proposals should be submitted online. Each submission should include a 500-word proposal of the paper that is to be considered for presentation and a 200-word biographical sketch of the author(s), along with other relevant information included on the submission form. CFA: Sakıp Sabancı International Research Award

Submissions are invited for an essay competition on the theme "New Directions for Turkish Foreign Policy in a Changing World Order: Challenges and Opportunities." The competition is open to all scholars in the social sciences with special interest on contemporary Turkey. The essays submitted to the competition should address the issues and challenges that are related to Turkish attempts to position and re-evaluate Turkish foreign policy to the increasingly fluid environment of world politics that involves shifts and transitions of power. In particular, the authors should assess the benefits and challenges of Turkey’s newly discovered pro-active foreign policy that may lead to realignments and revaluation of Turkey’s traditional positioning in world politics.  The Sakıp Sabancı International Research Award includes $20,000 for the first prize, $10,000 for the second, and $5,000 for the third. Entries must be submitted online in English by March 31, 2011.

CFA: Intelligence Studies Section Student Paper Award

The Intelligence Studies Section (ISS) of the International Studies Association, is pleased to announce the opening of the annual competition for the Intelligence Studies Section Student Paper Award. The $500 award is made annually by ISS in recognition of excellence for the best undergraduate or graduate student paper on a subject dealing with intelligence presented at the ISA annual conference. The competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in any university or college in a humanities, social science, or similar program. Only papers submitted and presented at the 2011 ISA Annual Convention are eligible. Papers may be nominated until March 15, 2011. Please see the award website for more information.

ISA Officer Election Results

Many thanks to all who participated in the recent ISA officer election for the 2012-2013 term. The election was held November 5th- December 5th, 2010 with votes cast by e-mail ballot and then verified and tabulated at ISA Headquarters.

CFA: Peacebuilding and Economic Development Study Abroad in Ecuador

The University of Georgia Center for the Study of Global Issues (GLOBIS) and the Center for Mediation, Peace, and Resolution of Conflict – International (CEMPROC) are currently accepting applications for the Peacebuilding and Economic Development Study Abroad Program in Ecuador, which will take place from July 9-August 1, 2011.  This program is open both to UGA undergraduate students and those enrolled in other universities, and participants will earn 6 credits for the courses ‘Peace Studies’ and ‘Politics of Development’.  A brief 3-minute video on the program is availabe here.
