CFP: Regional Organisations and Security

The Centre for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich invites the submission of paper abstracts for an international conference entitled ‘Regional Organisations and Security: Conceptions and Practices.’ The conference will be held in Zurich from 17-18, June 2011. This conference aims is to move beyond a simple outline of the institutional structures defining regional security landscapes, in order to explore the conceptions of, approaches to and practices of security adopted by ROs on their own terms. To this end, authors will be asked to examine a specific RO’s constructions and perceptions of security, as well as analysing how this understanding of security is enacted, in terms of the practices developed and policies implemented. Selected papers on individual ROs will be chosen by the conference organisers to form an edited volume, which aims to reach conclusions about whether we live in an increasingly globalised or regionally distinct world in terms of security perceptions and responses. Abstracts of no more than 500 words for papers analysing a particular RO should be sent to the conference organisers, Dr Stephen Aris (aris@sipo.gess.ethz.ch) and Professor Andreas Wenger by December 3, 2010. CFP: Change in Intergovernmental Organization

The organizers invite paper proposals for the 2nd ULB-UGent WIRE (Workshop on International Relations) to be held in Brussels, Belgium, May 27-28, 2011, on the theme "Institutional change in intergovernmental organization." The ULB/UGent Workshops on International Relations (WIRE) have a unique format: the number of participants is strictly limited, full papers are distributed long before the event, and authors speak only at the closure of discussions. More specifically, the 15-20 participants receive eight selected papers one month prior to the event, as the format necessitates reading them beforehand. At the workshop, a discussant kicks off each session by briefly introducing a paper. Then, the group discusses it for approximately one hour, providing an opportunity for an extensive and in-depth discussion involving every participant. The last few words of each session are given to the author for a short response to comments and criticisms. The ULB/UGent WIRE series are an opportunity for scholars to receive detailed feedback on ongoing research projects and to get acquainted in an informal setting. CFN: The Chadwick Alger Prize

The award committee announces a call for nominations for the Chadwick F. Alger Prize. The prize recognizes the best book published in the previous calendar year on the subject of international organization and multilateralism. The Award Committee is particularly interested in works dealing with how international organizations interact with nongovernmental organizations and other local civil society actors, as reflected in many of the writings of Chadwick F. Alger. The nomination deadline is December 15, 2010. Please see the award website for additional information.

CFA: PhD Fellowships, Central European University, Budapest

Central European University, a graduate institution accredited in the United States and Hungary, invites applications for the PhD Program in Political Science. The Doctoral School offers five specializations: Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political Economy, Political Theory, and Public Policy. The doctoral program of is one of the largest, most international and most competitive programs in Europe. Students, typically coming from more than 30 countries, can choose supervisors from a pool of more than 35 professors. The taught element of the program is composed of 24 US credits. During their studies the doctoral candidates are actively introduced to research networks in their field through participation in graduate conferences and in major research projects in which CEU faculty are partners or lead personnel. The Doctoral School collaborates with a number of research centers including the Center for Ethics and Law in Biomedicine, the Center for Media and Communication Studies, the Center for the Study of Imperfections in Democracy, the Center for Environment and Security, the Center for European Research and the Asia Research Initiative. Students admitted into CEU doctoral degree programs receive the Full CEU Doctoral Fellowship for three years. The Full CEU Doctoral Fellowship covers tuition and medical insurance; in addition, full fellowship recipients are awarded a monthly stipend of around 750 € covering educational and accommodation costs. Conference: American Society and its Profession of Arms

U.S. Army War College’s XXII Annual Strategy Conference will examine "American Society and its Profession of Arms" to be held at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, from April 5-7, 2011. Join over 20 leading experts, the U.S. Army War College Class of 2011, and 200 other strategists, academics, journalists, government officials, business leaders, and other members of the public as they examine and debate the critical relationship between the U.S. military and the American society. Conference: Assessing the Complexities of South Asian Migration

A conference on "Assessing the Complexities of South Asian Migration" will be held at Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada May 19th-21st  2011. The conference posits that examining South Asian migration necessitates interdisciplinary and international collaborative approaches to both conceptualization and field studies. The aim of this conference is to take stock of the different topics currently being researched by Canadian and international scholars, and define new areas for possible research, and opportunities for future collaboration. Graduate students and faculty are invited to attend this multidisciplinary conference. CFP: Gender Justice and Development, Local and Global

The program chairs invite papers on the theme Gender Justice and Development, Local and Global for an international confernece to be held June 9-11, 2011 at Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania. The conference is being organized by the International Development Ethics Association and will feature keynote speaker Naila Kabeer, IDS Sussex.  All topics in development ethics are welcome. CFP: LSE Global Governance International Conference

The organizers invite papers on the theme Persistent Conflict in the 21st Century for a conference to be held at the London School of Economics & Political Science on June 25, 2011. Proposals are invited from advanced PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, early-career academics and practitioners, that address any of the three broad themes of the conference: Conflict Duration and the Stages of Conflict; Drivers of Conflict Persistence; and, External Interventions. The organizers invite conceptual and theoretical contributions as well as case-study analysis of particular conflicts, with special emphasis on innovative qualitative and quantitative methods across the social sciences.
