Fellowship: Jennings Randolph Senior Fellowship Program

The Jennings Randolph (JR) Program for International Peace awards approximately 12 residential Senior Fellowships each year to allow outstanding scholars, practitioners, policymakers, journalists, and other professionals the opportunity to conduct research on peace, conflict, and international security while taking advantage of their time in Washington D.C. to make connections with other scholars and practitioners both inside and outside USIP.  These in-house fellowships normally last for ten months starting in October 2011.  Fellowships are open to citizens of any country and include a stipend of up to $100,000.  The application deadline is Sept. 8th, 2010. CfP: Institutional Dynamics in World Politics

The organizers invite papers for a workshop on the theme Institutional Dynamics in World Politics: Explaining variation in the scope, pace, and direction of international institutional change. The Workshop is to be held at the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB) from April 7-8, 2011. The goal of the workshop is to develop our understanding of international institutional variation and change by shifting the IR literature’s focus from comparative statics to models which emphasize the dynamics of international institutional variation and change. To do this we propose to focus on further developing key insights from historical institutionalism such as (but not limited to): path dependence, unintended consequences, timing and sequencing effects, critical junctures, and networks. The program chairs welcome both theoretical contributions that seek to further develop these concepts and methods, and also small- or large-n empirical studies. CfP: Debating Security: Changes and Challenges for Turkey

An international security conference on the theme Debating Security: Changes and Challenges for Turkey will take place on October 22-23, 2010 at Bahçeşehir University, Istanbul. Hosted by Bahçeşehir University and organized by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty and ARI Movement, the conference highlights the need for producing contemporary policies for decision-makers in Turkey that will take into consideration the changing global security order and the rising challenges at the national, regional and international level and their implications for Turkey’s security in the 21st century. The organizers invite proposals for papers for workshops that address the problems of Turkey’s security challenges and changes in the 21st century. They especially welcome proposals that bridge different theoretical and empirical divides within international security studies to address common substantive problems. CfP: PSI Guides to Terrorists, Insurgents and Armed Groups

Praeger Security International has launched a new series, in which each volume is meant to be a relatively short but authoritative research study of a particular terrorist group, insurgency or other armed group. Envisioned as works aimed at a broad audience (not specifically specialists in their respective fields), these volumes will chronicle the rise and (in many cases, but not all) the demise of terrorist organizations, insurgencies, and armed groups from around the globe, while addressing issues of international security, transnational threats, and regional concerns specific to each entity. Call for Nominations: FTGS Best Paper Award

The Feminist Theory and Gender Studies Section annually offers an award for the best feminist theory and/or gender studies graduate student paper presented at the last ISA meetings. The award carries a stipend of $100 and comes with a peer-review by the International Feminist Journal of Politics with a prospect for publication. We currently accept nominations for the best paper presented at the 2010 ISA conference in New Orleans.

Nominations may be made by anyone in the profession. We encourage in particular discussants and chairs on FTGS panels to let us know about outstanding papers you encountered. Self-nominations are also welcome. The person nominated must have been a student at the time the paper was presented. 

Nominations should include contact information of the nominee and, in the case of self-nominations, also a copy of the relevant paper. They should be submitted to the chair of the Award Committee at Elisabeth.Pruegl@graduateinstitute.ch by July 1, 2010. Results of the competition will be announced in early September 2010. Foreign Policy-Related Junior Faculty Book Grants

The Smith Richardson Foundation’s International Security and Foreign Policy Program is pleased to announce its annual grant competition to support junior faculty research on American foreign policy, international relations, international security, military policy, and diplomatic and military history.  The Foundation will award at least three research grants of $60,000 each to support tenure-track junior faculty engaged in the research and writing of a scholarly book on an issue or topic of interest to the policy community.

These grants are intended to buy-out up to one year of teaching time and to underwrite research costs (including research assistance and travel).  Each grant will be paid directly to, and should be administered by, the academic institution at which the junior faculty member works.  Projects in military and diplomatic history are especially encouraged.  Group or collaborative projects will not be considered. The deadline for submission is June 30, 2010, and the results will be announced by October 31, 2010. Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute's Darfur Seminar

The organizers invite you to the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute’s (HCRI) 3rd ESRC funded seminar entitled Darfur: Assessing the Assessments. This event will take place on Thursday 27 & Friday 28 May 2010 in Samuel Alexander Building LG12 at The University of Manchester. They will be  will be screening Darfur Diaries: Message from Home and will hold a post-film discussion – see program on the website. This event will take place at 6pm on Thursday 27 May 2010 in St Peter’s House Chaplaincy on Oxford Rd, Manchester. CFP: Turkish-ISA

The Turkish-ISA invites papers for the following three panels that it will be sponsoring in the Annual Convention of the International Studies Association at Montreal, Canada, MARCH 16-19, 2011:

1. Turkish Foreign Policy: Visions, Methods, Strategies - Roundtable
2. Turkey-European Union Relations at a Crossroads? On a Troubled Present and an Uncertain Future
3. Turkey in the Muslim World: Ideology and Pragmatism

We are particularly interested in but not limited to the papers on the following questions: Is Turkish foreign policy toward the Muslim world a strategic or an ideological choice? What role can Turkey play between the West and the Muslim world? How does Turkey's increasing role in the Muslim world influence its relations with the US and Europe? What are the domestic sources of Turkish foreign policy toward the Middle East and broader Muslim world? We plan to design a panel that brings diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives together.
