Conference: Authoritarianism in East Asia

The City University of Hong Kong’s Southeast Asia Research Centre (SEARC) announces a forthcoming international conference, entitled Authoritarianism in East Asia, which will be held June 29th to July 1st at the City University of Hong Kong’s campus.  The conference offers a timely and comparative examination of contemporary political institutions in China, Viet Nam, North Korea, Hong Kong, and Macao.  With the participation of numerous leading international scholars, the conference promises to be one of the most significant academic events in the region this year. CFP: Security and development in Transcaucasia and North Caucasia

Papers are invited for a panel on the theme Security and Development in Transcaucasia and North Caucasia, to be held at the ISA Annual Convention, Montreal, Canada (16-19 March 2011). The panel will explore the links between governance, development and security in Transcaucasia and North Caucasia, focusing on such issues as ethnopolitical and ethnoreligious conflicts in the region and the bilateral and multilateral instruments of conflict resolution; postcommunist transitions and transformation of the regional and local governance structures; corruption and crime in the region, its domestic and international consequences; international aid and development; energy security and the region's role in international security architecture; as well as the role of international and local NGOs in the promotion of human rights and good governance in the region. Two main areas that this panel seeks to address are: (a) regional security and its broader international ramifications; and (b) the interrelationship between domestic governance, security and development. CFP: Inter-Asian Connections II

The Hong Kong Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences (HKIHSS) at the University of Hong Kong, the National University of Singapore (NUS), and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) are pleased to announce an open call for individual research paper submissions from researchers in any world region, to participate in a 3-day thematic workshop at an international conference, “Inter-Asian Connections II: Singapore.” Application materials are due Monday, May 31, 2010. Accepted participants are required to submit a 20-25 page research paper by October 15, 2010. Please see the conference website for more information.

Proposal Deadline for Annual Convention

This is a one-week deadline reminder for the annual convention. As you know, the deadline to submit paper and panel proposals for the 2011 Annual Convention is June 1st, and we typically get he majority of those proposals in the last week. It's also helpful (and less stressful) to remember that you may work on drafts of your proposals in the MyISA system and continue to save them as drafts until you submit them. If you have already submitted a proposal and would like to make changes to it you may unsubmit it, revise it, and submit it by the deadline. Please see the convention website for more information.

The organizers of the Anti-Democracy Agenda Symposium 2010 invite paper proposals for the conference to be held 8-10 November 2010 at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich and the University of Zurich, at Castasegna, in the Swiss Alps. The symposium is set to be equally international and interdisciplinary in scope. The organizers invite affiliated academics, independent scholars, and doctoral students and candidates from a wide range of disciplines, such as Philosophy, Political Theory, Political Science, International Relations, Development Studies, Security Studies, Law, Economics, Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, Literature, History, Classics, Theology, Religious Studies, Education, and so on. Papers may not only cover any and all aspects of criticisms of democracy and anti-democratic thought and practice, from perspectives including anarchism, libertarianism, conservatism, communism, Islamism, the extreme right, and others, but also related concepts such as authoritarianism, dictatorship, military rule, monarchy, chieftaincy, mixed constitution, the backlash against democracy promotion, terrorism, post-democracy, voter apathy, voter ignorance, etc. Have a look at the blog to see what might be of interest and falls within our remit. Papers may be theoretical and/or empirical in nature. Work in progress is welcome too. No fees will be charged from participants, and no funding is available to cover participants' travel and accommodation expenses. CFP: SGIR 7th Pan-European International Relations Conference

The Standing Group in International Relations (SGIR) will hold its annual conference in Stockholm in September of this year on the theme Politics in Hard Times: International Relations Responses to the Financial Crisis. The conference will feature keynote speeches by Peter Gourevitch, Professor of Political Science, University of California at San Diego, and Ambassador Jan Eliasson, Senior Visiting Scholar at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) and former United Nations Special Envoy for Darfur. ISA has been invited to organize three panels at the conference. ISA members interested submitting a panel proposal are invited to send them to SGIR as soon as possible but no later than May 31st. The organizers invite proposals for a workshop devoted to developing the Political Theology Agenda to be held 18-19 August 2010 at Ecumenical Institute of the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the University of Geneva, Château de Bossey, near Geneva, Switzerland. The Political Theology Agenda Workshop 2010 is set to be equally international and interdisciplinary in scope. We invite affiliated academics, independent scholars, and doctoral students and candidates from a wide variety of disciplines, such as Theology, Religious Studies, Philosophy, Political Theory, Political Science, International Relations, Law, Literature, History, Jewish Studies, Education, Cultural Studies, Geography, and so on. Papers may not only cover any and all aspects of political theology, but also related concepts, such as liberation theology, public theology, black theology, the Christian Right, radical Orthodoxy, religious anarchism, minjung theology, Dalit theology, radical Islam, religious Zionism, political religion, civil religion, etc. Have a look at the blog to see what might be of interest and falls within our remit.
