Call for Nominations: 2010 Boulding Award

The Peace Studies Section of ISA sends this reminder that nominations for the 2010 Boulding Award are due this week. The award was established to honor Kenneth E. Boulding, a founder of the field of Peace Studies. The Award Committee seeks a graduate student research paper, delivered at the most recent ISA meetings, that is (a) theoretically based, (b) empirical (qualitative and/or quantitative), and (c) relevant to a significant problem in the field of peace studies. Any excellent exploration in the area of Peace Research is eligible. Direct submissions from graduate students and nominations from panel chairs and discussants are welcome. The award recipient will receive a two-year membership in ISA, a travel grant from the Peace Studies Section toward expenses to attend the ISA Annual Convention, and a certificate to be awarded at the 2011 convention. To nominate, please submit an electronic copy of the paper presented at the recent New Orleans convention to Gavan Duffy, gduffy@syr.edu. Please include the full contact information and institutional affiliations of the nominator and, if different, the nominee. Deadline for submissions: May 1, 2010.

The organizers invite paper and panel proposals for the 38th Annual Mid-Atlantic Region Association for Asian Studies Conference, to be held October 22-24, 2010, at Pennsylvania State University, State College, Pennsylvania. The conference theme is Sustainable Asia: Challenges and Opportunities. Please send a completed proposal form along with a one-page abstract for each proposed paper by May 1, 2010 to David Kenley, the MAR/AAS 2010 Program Chair. State Department Offers Grants for U.S./Afghanistan Professional Partnership Program

In his December 1, 2009, speech in West Point, New York, U.S. President Obama said that a new diplomatic initiative in Afghanistan would be part of the U.S. strategy to bring peace and stability in the Afghanistan/Pakistan region. As part of this initiative, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State is seeking proposals for a new program, called "The U.S./Afghanistan Professional Partnership Program." This program will bring young professionals from the two countries together to develop cross cultural relationships and develop professional skills that will positively impact people's lives and will result in stronger ties between the two nations. Applications are due by May 21, 2010.  The ECA expects to award one grant of $1.2 million for this project. For more information click here (PDF).

CFP: St Antony's International Review

After five years of publishing themed issues, forthcoming issues of the St Antony’s International Review (STAIR) will also include a General Section. STAIR therefore invites research manuscripts on topics of contemporary relevance in international affairs. Submissions from political science, law, area studies, economics, development studies, philosophy, and history will all be considered. Articles may take either a theoretical or a policy-oriented approach. STAIR will continue to devote at least half of each issue to a special theme of contemporary significance. The two issues to be published in 2011 will be on “China’s Rise: An Adapting Global Structure,” and “Responding to Crises: The Past, Present, and Future of International Financial Institutions.” Authors with an interest in these areas should therefore refer to the themed Calls for Papers available on the website. STAIR will review manuscripts of up to 6,000 words (including footnotes with complete bibliographic information). Authors are asked to include a word count and an abstract of no more than 300 words. Decisions can be expected within three months. For further information on manuscript preparation, referencing, and diction, please refer to the “Notes for Contributors” available on the website. STAIR is the only peer-reviewed journal of international affairs at the University of Oxford. Past contributors include John Baylis, Valerie Bunce, Robert Keohane, James Rosenau, and Alfred Stepan. The Journal of Strategic Security announces a call for articles for the Fall 2010 issue, Vol. 3, No. 3. Our peer-reviewed, quarterly Journal published by Henley-Putnam University is a multi-disciplinary forum for scholarship and discussion of strategic security issues drawing from the fields of intelligence, terrorism and counterterrorism studies and protection, among others. Conference: ACE Proposers' Day 2010

The Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) will host Proposers' Day for the Aggregative Contingent Estimation (ACE) program on Wednesday, May 19, 2010. The ACE program will focus on aggregating individual judgments to create group forecasts and on communicating the resulting quantitative probabilities to end-users. The purpose of the conference will be to provide information on the ACE Program, to address questions from potential proposers and to provide a forum for potential proposers to present their capabilities for teaming opportunities. The Journal of International Organization Studies invites article submissions in all areas of international organization research for its launch volume (issues 1 and 2). The journal is a new, peer-reviewed journal that seeks to encourage the creation of a distinct field of international organization studies, bringing together researchers and practitioners. The journal’s mission is to support innovative approaches in the study of international organizations which explore new grounds and transcend the traditional perspective of international organizations as merely the sum of its members.
