CfP: Global Media and the 'War on Terror'

The program chairs invite your participation in a conference on Global Media and the ‘War on Terror’: An International Conference to be held Monday 13 - Tuesday 14 September 2010 at the University of Westminster, UK. The conference is being organized by the Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI) of the University of Westminster, London, in collaboration with the Department of Media and Communications, Goldsmiths, University of London. Proposals should be between 200-350 words and must include the presenter’s name, institutional affiliation, email and postal address, together with the title of the paper and a brief biographical note. Two copies of the abstract should be sent, one to Professor Daya Thussu at D.K.Thussu@westminster.ac.uk and another to Helen Cohen, Events Administrator for the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at journalism@westminster.ac.uk. CfA: Hard Vs. Soft Power Conference

The program chairs invite participation in a conference examining Hard Vs. Soft Power: Foreign Policy Strategies in Contemporary International Relations to be held at Cambridge University (UK), June 23rd – 26th 2010. “Hard Vs. Soft Power” is an international congress that will explore the balance between hard and soft power in contemporary international relations and consider the future of the two approaches. The congress is a four day program of lectures, seminars, and panel discussions, being organized by the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy in cooperation with the Cambridge Union Society. CfA: PhD Scholarships, School of International Studies, University of Trento

The School of International Studies at the University of Trento is accepting applications for the places in the doctoral program in International Studies for the 2010-2011 academic year. The doctorate combines multidisciplinary approaches within a structure that allows students to specialize in one of three tracks: International Politics, International Law and International Economics. It is entirely in English, with a taught component in the first year. Candidates are asked to include in the application a short summary (max 5 pages - 2500 words) of their proposed research. Call for Applications: The Hertog Global Strategy Initiative

The Hertog Global Strategy Initiative seeks talented undergraduate and graduate students for its 2010 seminar on Nuclear Proliferation and the Future of World Power. The seminar will take place over twelve weeks, from May 24 through August 13, at Columbia University. It begins with three weeks of “total immersion” training in nuclear strategy. Then there are eight weeks in which students conduct independent research and/or work in the field. Then the class reconvenes for one more week, so that students can present their research and produce a joint report. Students taking the course for credit will receive eight points, the equivalent of two semester-long courses at Columbia.

The 2010 Initiative will be taught by Matthew Connelly, Professor of History at Columbia University, and Francis Gavin, Professor of International Affairs, University of Texas. They will be assisted in the classroom by a number of experts in the field, including world-class scholars and top government officials. Confirmed speakers include Graham Allison, Richard Betts, Hans Blix, Paul Bracken, John Lewis Gaddis, Robert Gallucci, Bonnie Jenkins, Robert Jervis, Henry Kissinger, Michael Levi, Scott Sagan, Etel Solingen, James Steinberg, Stephen Van Evera, and Philip Zelikow.

Access to ISA Compendium Project

Call for Nominations: Ernst-Otto Czempiel Award for Peace Research

The Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF) invites submissions for the Ernst-Otto Czempiel Award for peace research. The award, in honour of the former director of PRIF, is endowed with 5,000.- euros and will be given for the best postdoctoral monograph published in the field of peace research in 2008 or 2009. Book versions of Ph.D. theses and books by authors of the age of 45 or older at the date of publication are excluded.

Nominations and self-nominations are possible. Every nomination should contain the name, full address and e-mail address of the author and the title of the book. In the case of self-nomination, the application should in addition contain a CV, a list of publications, and a copy of the book. The nomination deadline is 31 May 2010.

The winner will be selected by a jury consisting of Prof. Dr Eva Senghaas-Knobloch, Prof. Dr Dirk Messner and Prof. Dr Harald Mueller. The award ceremony will take place during PRIF’s Annual Conference, on 22/23 October 2010, in Frankfurt/Germany.

Call for Nominations: 2010 Boulding Award

The Peace Studies Section of ISA invites nominations for the 2010 Boulding Award. The award was established to honor Kenneth E. Boulding, a founder of the field of Peace Studies. The Award Committee seeks a graduate student research paper, delivered at the most recent ISA meetings, that is (a) theoretically based, (b) empirical (qualitative and/or quantitative), and (c) relevant to a significant problem in the field of peace studies. Any excellent exploration in the area of Peace Research is eligible. Direct submissions from graduate students and nominations from panel chairs and discussants are welcome. The award recipient will receive a two-year membership in ISA, a travel grant from the Peace Studies Section toward expenses to attend the ISA Annual Convention, and a certificate to be awarded at the 2011 convention. To nominate, please submit an electronic copy of the paper presented at the recent New Orleans convention to Gavan Duffy, gduffy@syr.edu. Please include the full contact information and institutional affiliations of the nominator and, if different, the nominee. Deadline for submissions: May 1, 2010.

CfP: Conference on Social Movement Governance

The University of South Florida invites paper and panel proposals for the Conference on Social Movement Governance, The Poor an the New Politics of the Americas to be held Feb. 204, 2011, in Tampa, Florida. This is the first large meeting of its kind to bring together leading scholars (in dialogue with other actors) from throughout the world to collectively advance our understanding of what new forms of governance are emerging in the Americas and how they relate to the poor. The conference attempts to mobilize critical research on these themes by bringing researchers, based in the Americas or working on the Americas, together with those affecting and affected by the emergence of such new forms of politics and governance in the Americas, such as actors in civil society organizations, social movements and practitioners. The program chairs seek participants from a broad range of actors, scholars, leaders of social movements and practitioners operating in all regions of the Americas, including the U.S. and Canada, with a particular emphasis on interrelations across the Americas.
