CfP: Victoria University of Wellington

Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, invites paper proposals for a conference on the theme China and India: The End of Development Models? The conference will take place 12-13 April 2010 and is being sponsored and organized by the New Zealand Contemporary China Research Centre along with The Asian Studies Institute. CfP: Millennium 25th Northedge Essay Competition

Papers are invited for the Millennium 25th Northedge Essay Competition 2010. Established in 1986 to commemorate the invaluable contribution of the late Professor F.S. Northedge to the creation of Millennium, the annual Northedge Essay Competition furthers a tradition of publishing well-argued student work in a journal open to new issues and innovative approaches to International Relations. The competition is open to any student who is currently pursuing or has recently completed a degree in International Relations or a related field. The essay may be part of a doctoral research project, an essay or dissertation submitted as part of an undergraduate or Masters’ degree course, a seminar paper or similar work. The essay may be on any topic within International Relations or related areas of study. The essay must be typed, doubled-spaced and of approximately 7,000 to 10,000 words in length. The winning essay is generally published in the first issue of each volume. Submissions and other inquiries should be sent via email to millennium@lse.ac.uk. The deadline for submissions is Monday January 18th, 2010. 

CfP: Journal of International Law and International Relations

The Journal of International Law and International Relations (JILIR) is now inviting submissions from scholars of both International Law and International Relations for its Summer 2010 issue. The deadline for submissions is January 23, 2010. A joint venture of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and the Munk Centre for International Studies, the JILIR is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal that publishes articles on the wide variety of topics located in the intellectual space jointly occupied by International Law and International Relations.

CfP: 2010 Milton Wolf Essay Contest

The Diplomatic Academy Vienna in partnership with the Center for Global Communication Studies at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania will host a conference from March 16 – 18, 2010 in Vienna, Austria, organized by the American Austrian Foundation. The conference will bring together a diverse group of individuals representing multiple perspectives and nationalities.  Panelists include distinguished print and television journalists, bloggers and social media specialists, NGO actors involved in media outreach, academics, and diplomats.

The conference is organized around the theme: New Media, New Newsmakers, New Diplomacy: The Changing Role of Journalists, NGOs, and Diplomats in a Multi-modal Media World.  The purpose of the conference is two-fold: (1) to identify the changing role of NGOs, journalists, and diplomats in shaping the international media agenda, and (2) to bring together students, scholars and practitioners from around the world to participate in seminars and break out sessions designed to identify current problems and possible solutions to the challenges raised by this changing communications environment.

The conference organizers have launched an essay competition to identify motivated and thoughtful graduate students of international relations, development studies, communication, journalism, law, and related fields who will enrich the conference proceedings.  Seven winning essay writers will win a stipend of up to $1500 each to attend the 2010 Milton Wolf Seminar in Vienna. All essays must be approximately 1,500 words in length (2000 max).  They should be typewritten in English, and double-spaced. CfA: Peace Scholar Dissertation Scholarships

The Jennings Randolph (JR) Program for International Peace invites applications from students at U.S. universities who are writing doctoral dissertations on topics related to peace, conflict, and international security. Each year the program awards approximately ten Peace Scholar Fellowships. The scholarship provides a non-residential $20,000 stipend for Ph.D. students completing their dissertation. Fellowships last for 10 months starting in September. Fellowships are open to citizens of any country. Dissertation projects in all disciplines are welcome. Applications should be received by January 5, 2010. More information is available on the USIP website.

CfP: International Graduate Student Conference on the Cold War

Three partner institutions,the George Washington University Cold War Group (GWCW), the Center for Cold War Studies (CCWS) of the University of California Santa Barbara, and the Cold War Studies Centre at LSE IDEAS are pleased to announce their 2010 International Graduate Student Conference on the Cold War, to take place at George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs, April 22-24, 2010. The conference is an excellent opportunity for graduate students to present papers and receive critical feedback from peers and experts in the field. We encourage submissions by graduate students working on any aspect of the Cold War, broadly defined. Of particular interest are papers that make use of newly available primary sources. CfA: Mellon Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in Contemporary History

The George Washington University’s Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (IERES) is pleased to announce a call for applications for the Mellon Pre-doctoral Fellowship in Contemporary History for 2010-2011. Applicants need to have completed archival research for their dissertation in two or more countries and be at the final writing stage of their dissertation. The Fellow must be in residence at IERES from September 2010 through June 2011 and will be provided with an office and computer. The Fellow will also help the IERES Director administer several workshops that train Ph.D. candidates to conduct archival research. The award will offer support in the amount of $25,000 per year, plus benefits. Deadline for all fellowship applications is January 18, 2010. For more information, please see the IERES website.

CfA: Summer Institute on Conducting Archival Research

Ph.D. students from any discipline working on dissertations involving archival research (particularly in relatively newly accessible archives) are invited to apply to participate in the 8th annual Summer Institute on Conducting Archival Research (SICAR) at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C., June 7-11, 2010. SICAR trains graduate students to get the most out of their time conducting research in archives. The deadline for applications is February 25, 2010.
