CfP: JIBS Special Issue

The Journal of International Business Studies invites paper proposals for a special issue that seeks to promote and shape the future direction for multilevel quantitative research in the field of international business. The purpose of this special issue is to narrow the gap between theoretical models and quantitative methods in international business research. We want to showcase high-quality multilevel quantitative studies, to encourage international business researchers to apply these methods, and to underline their value in studying new international business topics or renewing the analysis of older ones. Hence, we seek original empirical contributions using multilevel quantitative methods to extend international business research. As a result, this special issue should set a definite standard of the use of multilevel methods in high-quality IB research that uses such data, and serve as a milestone for the development and spread of these methods in IB.

We encourage prospective authors to address a variety of questions while applying multilevel methods in an international or comparative context. U.S. Institute of Peace Senior Fellowship Program

The U.S. Institute of Peace Jennings Randolph program calls for applicants for the 2010-2011 Senior Fellowship Program. The Jennings Randolph (JR) Program for International Peace awards approximately 12 residential Senior Fellowships each year to allow outstanding scholars, practitioners, policymakers, journalists, and other professionals the opportunity to conduct research on peace, conflict, and international security while taking advantage of their time in Washington D.C. to make connections with other scholars and practitioners both inside and outside USIP. These in-house fellowships normally last for ten months starting in October 2010.  Fellowships are open to citizens of any country and include a stipend of up to $100,000. The application deadline is September 8th, 2009.

CfP: Akita International University

Akita International University is pleased to announce its international conference on comparative analysis over studies of Japanese politics in the United States and studies of US politics in Japan to be held November 21-22, 2009 at Akita International University, Akita Prefecture, Japan. The conference theme is: American Studies of Japanese Politics and Japanese Studies of American Politics: Comparison and Differences. This conference will combine faculty members of Global Studies in AIU with outside scholars to scrutinize important gaps between Japanese Studies in the United States and American Studies in Japan, with focus on political system, political society, or political culture, and so on. AIU welcomes any paper proposals which deal with the major theme of this conference. Proposals should include a one-page abstract and one page c.v., as well as a list of major publications. Electronic submissions are preferred and should be sent to Itsuki Kurashina at Conf2009@aiu.ac.jp. Submission Deadline: September 20, 2009.

ISA-Midwest Call for Papers

The 2009 ISA Midwest conference will be held in St. Louis, November 6-8, 2009.  The call for papers is available on-line at http://isa-m.missouri.edu/. Proposals should be received by August 31, 2009.

This year’s ISA Midwest conference will feature a roundtable reviewing a project assessing global nuclear stability. The project produced by the United States Strategic Command's Global Innovation and Strategy Center (GISC) reviewed tools and methodologies for assessing global nuclear stability in a multipolar world. As America prepares to review its defense and nuclear posture, the Department of Defense customer told GISC leaders it is more vital than ever to understand how both friends and potential adversaries look at the acquisition, proliferation and use of nuclear weapons. A team of senior policy and analytical experts engaged in two workshops held in February and April 2009 to identify and define relevant nuclear stability indicators in the diplomatic, information, military, economic, and other realms existing within nation-states. A resulting set of tools and methodologies now exists for assessing how both America's friends and competitors view nuclear stability. The project has been briefed and has already been called a significant step in building the nation's understanding of how friends and potential adversaries look at nuclear weapons.

Following a presentation of the project, Paul Diehl, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Sumit Ganguly, Indiana University, and Mary Habeck, SAIS, The Johns Hopkins University will offer observations.

Alexander George Graduate Student Paper Competition

Graduate students are invited to participate in the 2010 Alexander George Graduate Student Paper Competition sponsored by the Foreign Policy Analysis Section of the ISA. The award was established in 1990 to recognize an outstanding graduate student paper presented on a Foreign Policy Analysis Section panel at the ISA Annual Convention. Entries for the competition must be papers presented on a panel or during a poster session sponsored by the Foreign Policy Analysis Section at the 2009 convention in New York City.

To enter the competition, please e-mail a copy of your paper (in MS Word or PDF format) by no later than October 1, 2009 to the chair of the award committee, Professor Patrick Haney (haneypj@muohio.edu). The Award Committee consists of the Foreign Policy Analysis Section Members-at-Large: Patrick Haney, Zeynap Taydas, and Cameron Thies. The Executive Council of the ISA Human Rights Section, the Steering Committee of the APSA Human Rights Section and the Council of the IPSA Human Rights Research Committee announce their first joint Conference, "Assessing the state of human rights nine years after 9/11," to take place on 19-20 June 2010 at Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

ISSS/ISAC Conference Deadline Reminder

Please note that the deadline for submitting proposals for the annual ISSS/ISAC conference is in two weeks—Friday, July 31.  This year’s conference will be held in beautiful Monterey, California, from Thursday, October 15, to Saturday, October 17, 2009.  The conference theme is “Insecurity and Durable Disorder: Challenges to the State in an Age of Anxiety.”  Paper and panel proposals are welcome addressing a wide range of issues, including (but not limited to) international security, arms control and proliferation, regional conflict, environmental security, intelligence, and changes in the nature of warfare and the strategic environment.

The conference is being sponsored by the Naval Postgraduate School, the Monterey Institute for International Studies, and the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, and it will be held at the Hyatt Regency Monterey.  For more information on the conference, including the full call for papers and information on conference registration and on making hotel reservations, please see our website.

Call for Participants: ALIAS Interactive Poster Session

The Active Learning in International Studies Section is showcasing its Pedagogical Playground: Classroom Exercises and Teaching Tools at the ISA Annual Convention in New Orleans. The section is seeking participants to demonstrate engaging exercises, teaching materials and techniques used in their classes. Sample topics include role-playing exercises, the use of internet and other technologies, games, and experiential learning strategies. The poster session will be held in a very visible location so that colleagues may observe these exercises. This is to remind you of the upcoming July 31st deadline for workshop grant proposals to be held in conjunction with the 2010 ISA Annual Convention in New Orleans, LA, February 17-20. These grants support workshops for collaborative research that is new and innovative and involves scholars who are drawn from the global international studies community.
