Call for Nominations: Non-North American Members-At-Large

Each year the International Studies Association elects three Non-North American members-at-large to our Governing Council for a two-year term, staggering the terms of office for the six representatives.  Any ISA member may nominate a Non-North American ISA member to serve on the Governing Council; however, only Non-North American ISA members may vote in the election. 

We are currently soliciting nominations for the Non-North American members-at-large 2010-2011 term.  Nominees must be individual ISA members residing outside of the United States and Canada.  When nominating please determine that the nominee is willing to stand for election and serve if elected.  Representatives are required to attend the ISA 2010-2011 Governing Council Meetings during the Annual Conventions.  Please solicit nominees, or nominate yourself, for these three members-at-large positions.

ISA Headquarters will accept nominations until November 17, 2008.  Nominations may be sent to Adam Peresman via e-mail, FAX or by mail to ISA Headquarters.  Contact information for both the nominator and the nominee should be included.

The elections will be held December 1 through December 15, 2008.  Final voting will be by electronic ballot.  Each ISA member outside of the United States and Canada will receive an electronic ballot.  The deadline for returning ballots will be December 15, 2008.  The results of the election will be posted on our website (http://www.isanet.org) on or before January 12, 2009.

CfP: Africa Initiative Project

With the recent waves of changes on global politics, wealth and resources, the Africa continent, as argued in academia, continues to fall behind in an alarming rate. To close this gap, The Africa Initiative Project (TAIP) invites scholars, organizations, upper graduate students, and government officials working in the area of development for a conference to be held on November 20-21, 2008 to explore the following themes:

    * Domestic Political Organization and Cooperation
    * Health and Delivery Systems Disparities
    * Environmental Issues
    * Justice and Social Awareness

Papers and Abstracts addressing topics closely to the theme above are to be sent to taip@asu.edu. At the same time, all inquiries can be done by emailing TAIP using the same email address. Updates on the conference will be available on www.taip.asu.edu shortly.

FPA Distinguished Scholar Award

The Foreign Policy Analysis Section of the International Studies Association is soliciting nominations for its Distinguished Scholar Award to be given at the annual convention in New York City in February 2009.  Self-nominations are also welcome.

Nominations should include a letter of support and the nominee's C.V.  As a general guideline, nominees should have a substantial record of publishing in the field and service to the section. Please send nominations and letters of support to me via email (cmjones@niu.edu) by no later than October 3, 2008.

The recipient will be selected by the section's six-member Executive Council. A panel highlighting the distinguished scholar's contributions to the field of foreign policy analysis and the broader profession will be organized for the meeting in New York. In addition, the distinguished scholar will be honored at a reception where he or she will be presented with a plaque.

Annual Convention Participation Announcements

ISA is sending out notification letters by e-mail starting today. You will be notified about the status of your paper, panel or poster proposal and invited to login to the MyISA system to check on your participant status. If you do not receive an e-mail announcement by Friday, please let ISA HQ know.

Using the MyISA system, you will be able to view at a glance all of your convention details. You will be able to review your panel information as well as build a listing of the panels you would like to attend. The MyProgram feature allows you to take advantage of our now fully searchable online program to find and select panels that you would like to attend and print out your own personalized schedule for the convention.

MPSA Editorial Search

The Midwest Political Science Association invites applications from individuals, pairs, or teams for the Editorship of the American Journal of Political Science (AJPS) for the years 2010 through 2013. Nominations and self-nominations are encouraged. Interested applicants for Editor should be full professors in Political Science doctoral degree-granting programs.  Applicants are expected to have records of significant research accomplishment, intellectual breadth and depth, and administrative, organizational and interpersonal skills. ISA Compendium Project Update

The International Studies Compendium Project will be the most comprehensive reference work of its kind for the field of international studies. Peer reviewed essays of up to ten thousand words will focus on important topics and issues. Each essay will provide a comprehensive review of the development of the literature in a given area, as well as a focused discussion of current themes. Essays are designed to allow readers to be brought quickly up-to-date on the nature of questions asked, past attempts at formulating responses, and the current state of debates in a given issue area. These essays are designed for students, scholars or practitioners who want to understand the development of our thinking on international studies.

Every ISA Section, along with groups in political geography and IR theory, has created a list of topics to be included in the project.  These lists have now been reviewed and in some cases, revised and Section Editors have worked within each section to identify potential authors.  To date, we have authors committed to write on approximately 80% of the over 650 Compendium Project review essays. Both authors and reviewers rely on the Wiley-Blackwell author submission website for the formal peer-review process.  We aim to have all of the review essays into the copyediting stage by the end of March 2009.

United Nations University Experts Network

A central part of the mandate at the United Nations University involves building an international database of scholars that can be called upon in the future for their expertise. This expert network aims to provide a service by linking specialists around the world, facilitating the spread of knowledge and expertise on a truly global level. UNU does research and capacity development in governance and sustainable development, with a focus on developing countries. UNU welcomes participation from experts in any fields related to this broad spectrum: from international law, to philosophy, to environmental science, to sociology, to political science and more. The Deborah Gerner Grant for Professional Development

The Deborah Gerner Grant for Professional Development is awarded by the Women's Caucus of International Studies (WCIS) and sponsored by Lynne Rienner Publishers. Funds from this grant may be used to support any legitimate professional development need identified by the candidate. Some examples of possible uses include the following: (a) Travel to a professional meeting, (b) travel to conduct interviews, work with a colleague on a collaborative project, or field research, (c) purchase of databases, software, books, or other materials needed for research, or (d) participation in an appropriate pedagogy workshop or institute. Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate program leading to a Ph.D., or must have earned a doctorate within the last five (5) years. Usually, only one grant of up to $2,000 will be awarded in any given year, but in exceptional circumstances more than one grant may be awarded. For more information please see the award website. CfP: International Interdisciplinary Conference

The Center for Spirituality, Ethics and Global Awareness and International Program, Davis and Elkins College, WV, invites paper proposals on the conference theme Freedom and Sovereignty, Globalization and Colonization. The deadline for abstracts (150 words) is October 1, 2008. Selected papers from conference will be subjected to editorial review. The first 10 registered participants will be eligible for a small travel stipend. More information is available on the conference website.

Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, PhD in Public Policy

The Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy was formally established in 2004 as an autonomous graduate school of the National University of Singapore. Its mission is to provide opportunities for the education and training of the next generation of Asian policy-makers and leaders, with the objective of raising the standards of governance throughout the region, improving the lives of people in the region and, in so doing, contribute to the transformation of Asia. The PhD programme will strengthen the capability and effectiveness of candidates in researching complex multi-dimensional policy issues. It will equip candidates with the necessary theoretical frameworks, research methods and tools to conduct scientific inquiry to address contemporary public policy issues.
