REGIS Workshop for Canadian Women in International Security

The Research Group in Internation Security (REGIS) wishes to emphasize women’s presence and contribution in international security. In order to achieve this, REGIS will organize a workshop that will be held from May 1-4, 2008, Montreal, Quebec. REGIS is a collaborative undertaking between Université de Montréal and McGill University faculty specializing in International Security, and is funded by the Canadian Department of National Defense's Security and Defense Forum (SDF). We invite graduate students in Security Studies to participate to this workshop.  Proposals may be submitted in English or in French and should not exceed 200 words. ENMISA Awards Announced

The Ethnicity, Nationalism and Migration Studies (ENMISA) Section is pleased to annouce the winners of its annual competitions.  The 2008 Distinguished Scholar is Aristide R. Zolberg (New School for Social Research).  There will be a roundtable panel honoring his contributions on Friday, March 26 from 3:45 - 5:30 during the ISA convention.  The 2007 Martin O. Heisler Graduate Student Paper Award receipents (presenters at the Chicago Conference) include first place winner, Tristan James Mabry  "Laitin on Language" and second place Omar McDoom "Why Men Kill: The Microfoundations of Ethnic Radicalization and Extremism: Insights from Rwanda." They will receive their awards in San Francisco at the ENMISA business meeting. 

This year the ENMISA business meeting will be in Franciscan B at the San Francisco Hilton, Friday, March 28, 5:45 to 6:30 p.m.  Please join us for the ENMISA joint reception, Thursday, March 27, 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., in Imperial A at the San Francisco Hilton.

CfP: Liberalism and Social Democracy: A failed marriage?

Online journal Re-public invites contributions for its upcoming special issue entitled Liberalism and Social Democracy: A failed marriage?. Whether "traditional" social democracy is proclaimed dead, still surviving, or mutated, what has happened to it in the post-Cold war era is its encounter with liberalism. All attempts to renovate social democracy –the Third way, the social-democratic version of participatory democracy - have necessarily, albeit in different ways, engaged with the liberal tradition.

The debate on the outcomes of this encounter is multi-fold: to the argument that liberal injections to the social democratic tradition have been insufficient others have replied that liberalism has strangled traditional social democratic values, and yet others that the marriage has been a happy one, contributing to the reinvigoration of social democracy. The special issue aims to re-visit this debate, refraining though from generalised conclusions. The attempt, instead, will be to explore how contemporary social democracy can deal with liberal principles in relation to concrete socio-political problems.

The International Society of Political Psychology’s next annual scientific meeting will be held at Sciences Po in Paris, France, July 9 to July 12, 2008, focusing on the theme: Building Bridges: Political Psychology and Other Disciplines, Political Psychology and the World. The Pennsylvania Governor’s School for International Studies (PGSIS) is now accepting applications for a core course instructor in international relations.
