POSTCOM Section
Robert H. Donaldson Award
for Outstanding Paper
in Post-Communist Studies

This year POSTCOMM will award the Robert H. Donaldson prize for best paper written on the post-Communist region, as defined in our charter. Submissions will be accepted until September 1st, and a winner will be determined by November 1st.

Award Details

  1. All submissions must be from POSTCOM members who are in good standing (dues paid in the year paper is submitted), and must have been presented at the annual ISA meeting in the year the paper is submitted (i.e., the 2013 award must be from papers given at the 2013 Convention in San Francisco and the award will be presented at the 2014 Annual Convention).
  2. Submissions must be unpublished papers (may be under review, but cannot appear in print before the submission deadline). An individual may appear as author or co-author on only one submission.
  3. Submissions must be in English and be between 5000 and 7500 words long, including references and notes. Papers may be from any discipline in the social sciences, may be theoretical or empirical in emphasis, but must cover some portion of the POSTCOM region, as defined in the charter.
  4. Review of submissions will use a double-blind system. Submissions should not include information about the author—a separate sheet ( in a separate file) providing the author’s name and institutional affiliation should be included with the submitted paper. Self-references in the text and/or notes of the paper should be redacted before submission.
  5. Submissions should be sent to the Award Committee Chair in electronic format as either a pdf file or WORD document. All submissions must be received by 5:00 pm EST, September 1st .
  6. The author(s) of the winning paper will receive recognition, a plaque and a $200.00 cash prize at the POSTCOM business meeting at the ISA Annual Convention, as well as notice in the POSTCOM newsletter and website.
  7. Contributions: People who wish to make a donation to help fund this award may send their contribution to the ISA-HQ office. Please be sure to reference the "Donaldson Award" with your contribution. ISA is a 501c3 non-profit corporation under the IRS rules. Please contact the ISA Director of Operations (isa@isanet.org) if you have questions about making a donation.

Award Committee

The Chair of the Award Committee is responsible for establishing the evaluation process and for notifying the recipient in a timely manner in advance of the ISA Annual Convention.
