Named for Karl Deutsch, this award was established in 1981 to recognize scholars in IR under age 40, or within ten years of defending their dissertation. The Karl Deutsch Award is presented annually to a scholar who is judged to have made (through a body of publications) the most significant contribution to the study of International Relations and Peace Research.

Submission/Nomination
- Nominees must be under age 40, or have defended their dissertation in 2002 or later.
- Each nomination must include a cover letter highlighting specific scientific merits (not merely generic praise) and an updated curriculum vitae of the nominee, including verifiable date of birth and date of the doctoral degree.
- Self-nominations are welcome. Committee members may also nominate potential recipients.
- Nominations should be submitted electronically to all three members of the award committee by August 1st.
Selection
- Only candidates satisfying the merit and age requirements will be considered.
- The winner will be notified after October 1st.
Prize
- A $500.00 (USD) cash prize is awarded to the recipient.
Award Committee
The three member committee is appointed by the ISA President with the concurrency of the Governing Council. Their two year terms officially begin with the ISA Governing Council meeting of the first year listed and end with the closing of the ISA Governing Council meeting of the final year listed.
The Committee Chair is responsible for sending award information to the ISA Award Coordinator and for notifying the recipient of the award and encouraging the recipient to attend the Annual Convention at which the award is to be presented so as to receive the award in person.
