The Karl Deutsch Award

Established in 1981, the Karl Deutsch Award is presented annually to a scholar in IR under age 40, or within ten years of defending his or her dissertation, who is judged to have made, through a body of publications, the most significant contribution to the study of International Relations and Peace Research.

About the Award:

  • Nominees must be born in 1968 or later, or have defended their dissertation in 1998 or later.
  • Each nomination must include a cover letter highlighting specific scientific merits (not merely generic praise) and an updated curriculum vitae of the nominee, including verifiable date of birth and date of the doctoral degree. Only candidates satisfying the merit and age requirements will be considered.
  • Self-nominations are welcome. Committee members may also nominate potential recipients.
  • Nominations should be submitted electronically to all three members of the award committee by August 1, the winner will be notified after October 1st. 
  • A $500.00 (USD) cash prize to the recipient is awarded from the ISA General Account
  • The three Member Committee is appointed by the ISA President with the concurrency of the Governing Council
  • Members serve two-year terms. Member terms officially begin with the ISA Governing Council meeting of the first year listed and end with the closing of the ISA Governing Council meeting of the final year listed.
  • The Committee Chair is responsible for sending award information to the ISA Award Coordinator and for notifying the Recipient of the Award and encouraging the Recipient to attend the Annual Convention at which the Award is to be presented so as to receive the Award in person.
