Welcome to ISA
The International Studies Association (ISA) was founded in 1959 to promote research and education in international affairs. With well over four thousand members in North America and around the world, ISA is the most well respected and widely known scholarly association in this field. ISA cooperates with 57 international studies organizations in over 30 countries, is a member of the International Social Science Council, and has nongovernmental consultative status with the United Nations.
If you are not a member of our association, we urge you to join and begin to enjoy the benefits of membership. Members benefit from a broad range of activities and services, including the following:
CONVENTIONS: The Association's annual convention is a major international scholarly event, including over 800 panel sessions and involving participants from more than fifty countries. Conventions are held at alternative sites in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and overseas. The next annual convention will be held in San Francisco in March of 2008. ISA also cosponsors international conferences with our cooperating organizations around the world. Recent examples of such conferences include the joint convention in Hong Kong between Hong Kong University and ISA in July of 2001, the joint conference in Budapest between Central European University and ISA in June of 2003, and the joint conference in Istanbul between the World International Studies Committee and ISA in August of 2005. The next international conference will be hosted with the World International Studies Committee in Slovenia in July of 2008.
PUBLICATIONS: The Association sponsors five professional journals of the highest quality in international relations. International Studies Quarterly (ISQ) started in conjunction with the association as its flagship journal. With a broad interdisciplinary and multinational perspective, the International Studies Review (ISR) tracks worldwide trends, synthesizing theory and literature in the field. International Studies Perspectives (ISP) began publication in 2000 and is focused on teaching, research, and the state of the profession. Foreign Policy Analysis (FPA), provides a peer-reviewed outlet for the highest quality academic research into the processes, outcomes and theories of foreign policy. And finally, our most recent journal, International Political Sociology (IPS) debuted this year as an interdisciplinary journal responding to the diversification of both scholarly interests and regional concerns in contemporary international studies. Our journals are just one of the many benefits of membership.
BUILDING COMMUNITIES OF SCHOLARS: In order to develop better communications between specialists and practitioners and scholars, the topical and functional interests of ISA members are reflected in twenty-three interdisciplinary sections. Each section has its own officers and events. Section activities include organizing panels and enhancing communications among interested scholars through meetings, publications, and occasional papers. Some sections also hold annual meetings.
Membership in ISA will provide substantial benefits to both scholars, practitioners, and students of international affairs. If you are not already a member, we urge you to join us now.
