2010 Nominating Committee Report

July 20, 2010

From: John Ishiyama, Chair, ISA Nominating Committee

Re: Committee Report

After careful deliberation, the International Studies Association Nominating Committee (Karen Alter, D. Scott Bennett, Mary Caprioli, Neta Crawford, Virginia Page Fortna, Emilie Hafner- Burton, Fen Osler Hampson, John Ishiyama, and Keith Krause) unanimously agreed to a single slate of candidates for ISA officers: Etel Solingen for president, Paul Diehl, Sara Mitchell, and Mustapha Kamal Pasha for vice presidents. All of these nominees have been contacted by the Committee Chair and have agreed to serve if elected.

The procedures followed were generally the same as in previous years. We met and organized at the ISA annual meeting in New Orleans and prepared a call for nominations that was distributed to the full membership in March 2010. At that time, we asked for nominations for president and vice president. We set a deadline of May 14, 2010 for submission of names and asked for a letter of nomination in support of the candidate as well as a copy of his or her CV. We also asked each of the names forwarded whether they would be willing to serve if nominated. We made final decisions via a Skype conference call on Wednesday, July 7th, 2010.

We had seven nominations for president and ten nominations for vice-president. The committee agreed that we were very fortunate to have such an extremely strong group of candidates from which to choose.

The committee was extremely pleased with the final slate of candidates and we as a committee believe that they will serve ISA very well in their capacities as officers of the association. The candidates are all very accomplished scholars, and have demonstrated a high degree of commitment and service to the association. We are also very confident that the slate of candidates reflects diversity in terms of representing the many constituencies within the association.

We on the committee thank you again for the opportunity to serve the International Studies Association. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

John Ishiyama

Chair, ISA Nominating Committee
