ISA 2018: Common Submission Issues

Due to the overwhelming response to this year's Call for Papers, the deadline for ISA 2018 Annual Convention proposals has been extended to Saturday, June 3rd at midnight, EDT.

We've included some additional information below about common problems submitters are encountering. Please also feel free to contact us at isa@isanet.org if you have any questions or concerns. ISA staff are working ensure access and to respond to all requests. Thank you very much for your patience as we work through issues within our system.

We look forward to seeing you in San Francisco.

1. 504 Gateway Time-out / Runtime Error

This means that our webserver was not able to respond in time and your connection timed out. This can most likely be fixed by refreshing the page.

How to refresh the page:

  • Hitting Control (Ctrl) and F5 button at the same time (in Windows)
  • Cmd + Shift + R (for Mac)
  • Clicking on the Refresh key in the top of your browser (often looks like a curled arrow)
  • Clicking in the URL text bar (where website address is listed) and hitting Enter.

Users who continue to encounter issues may find it easier to log out of isanet.org and log back in to refresh their connection.

2. A critical error has occurred. An unexpected error has occurred

This is a general error, often also due to timeout issues. Please refresh your browser and/or try logging out and back in again. If you continue to experience this error, please check back again later. If you continue to experience this error, please let us know at isa@isanet.org.

3. Adding Tags

Begin typing your tag word in the left textbox (do not "paste" them). As you type, the system will filter results and will display them in a list below the box. Once your tag appears, please click on the word to select it. Selected/current tags will appear in the list on the right. You need to select at least 3, and no more than 10, tags. (Only tag words already in the system can be added.)

Presently the tag list search is taking longer than expected. You can peruse our list of current research tags here to determine your tags in advance. Once you've typed in your tag word for the search (or at least the first two letters), please allow additional time for the tag list to load the search results below.

4. Adding Groups/Sections/Caucuses

When selecting an ISA group to submit to, click on a group in the left-hand column under the heading "Available Groups" directly to the right of this column/box are 2 arrows, pointing right and left. After selecting a group from the list, the one pointing right will become darker and once you click on it, will make your selected group move to the right hand column/box under the heading "Submit To (in order)". You can use the up and down arrows to the right of this box/column to shift the order of any groups you would like to submit to.

5. Participation Limit

"This participant is on too many items - participants are limited to appearing on no more than four total submissions."
This means that the participant that you just tried to add to your item (paper, panel or roundtable), has already been placed on four items (either draft or submitted items).

"This individual is already an author on two other papers."
This means that the author that you just tried to add to your paper has already been placed on two papers.

If you are personally reaching either of these limits, you can remove yourself from any unwanted drafts, or delete them entirely, in order to proceed. If you are reaching these limits due to trying to add someone else, please contact them about reaching the limit.

Your list of existing submissions can be found at http://www.isanet.org/Conferences/San-Francisco-2018/Submissions. In progress proposals can be edited by using the "Edit the Proposal" link to the left of the proposal, while submitted proposals can be Unsubmitted (using the link to the left), edited and resubmitted.

To remove yourself from a proposal that you do not own, click on the Details link to the right of the proposal. A pop-up window will appear with the proposal details. Scroll to the bottom of that pop up window to see the active individuals on the proposal. Click the (Remove Me) link to the right of your name to remove yourself from a proposal. The system will verify that you wish to confirm this action before proceeding.

6. Edit Submitted Proposals

You can update your proposals in any manner you wish up to the deadline of June 3rd.

To do so, simply select the "Unsubmit" button to the left of the proposal you wish to edit (http://www.isanet.org/Conferences/San-Francisco-2018/Submissions). It will then appear in the list of of your "In-Progress Proposals" and you can select the "edit" button to the left of the proposal. When you've made the changes you wanted, simply select the "review and submit" button in the top right corner to resubmit your proposal.

There is no need to re-enter all of your proposal information, simply make sure that you do resubmit the panel before June 1st. Anything left in the "In-Progress Proposals" area after June 3rd will not be considered for the Annual Convention Program.

7. Incomplete Proposals

The system will not allow partial proposal submissions. Please ensure that your proposal meets all of the submission requirements by reviewing the proposal requirements at http://www.isanet.org/Conferences/San-Francisco-2018/Submissions/Types.

When submitting your proposal, the first step is to click the blue "Review and Submit" button. At this point, the system will tell you if your proposal is complete and ready to submit, or if your item is incomplete, and which items are needed in order to complete your proposal. If your proposal is incomplete, the system will give you the option to go back and edit your proposal, at which time you can click "Review and Submit" to review your complete proposal before submitting.

Please note: Because browsers can easily be out of date or have special plugins that can interfere with our system, browser compatibility is occasionally a concern with the submissions system. When it doubt, try using a different browser to access the system such as Mozilla Firefox, Chrome, Safari or Internet Explorer.

Why is the website still freezing on Saturday? I've tried to submit 6 times between 5:30 and 7:30 pm and no luck. Extend the deadline again please. People have other things to do.

I also tried repeatedly yesterday (Sat June 3) throughout the day, unable to add tags. I'd appreciate being contacted as well.
