The International Studies Association (ISA), the world’s largest association of scholars in the field, has been watching the developments surrounding higher education and regulations regarding research universities in Hungary with increasing concern. The recent announcements on this matter, which appear to be singling out the Central European University (CEU), are of great concern for many ISA members. As decisions are made in the coming days and weeks, we strongly encourage the Hungarian government to act in accordance with the principle of academic freedom, a principle we hold sacrosanct.

On Friday, January 27, 2017, President Donald Trump signed an executive order which bans entry of all refugees to the United States for 120 days, and which suspends entry for refugees, immigrants, dual nationals, and US permanent residents from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen for 90 days, or longer.

ISA has received many messages of concern in recent days about developing policy changes within the United States. The ISA leadership are all deeply concerned about the implications of these changes, especially for scholars from affected countries. As always, ISA remains dedicated to and embraces diversity, inclusion and academic freedom in all of our activities and programs. We remain committed to this philosophy for the 2017 Baltimore convention and beyond.

The International Studies Association

Representing over 100 countries, ISA has more than 6,500 members worldwide and is the most respected and widely known scholarly association in this field. Endeavoring to create communities of scholars dedicated to international studies, ISA is divided into 6 geographic subdivisions of ISA (Regions), 29 thematic groups (Sections) and 4 Caucuses which provide opportunities to exchange ideas and research with local colleagues and within specific subject areas.
