The International Studies Association (ISA) reaffirms its statement of January 21, 2016 concerning the situation in Turkey. In that statement, the ISA endorsed the January 18, 2016 statement of international academic associations around the world condemning the actions of the Turkish government in relation to a statement written by Turkish academics concerning the situation of Kurds in Turkey.

Since that time, the Academic Freedom Committee of the ISA has received an appeal from a scholar in Turkey indicating that violations of academic freedom by the government are continuing and requesting that the ISA condemn such violations. In light of this request, the ISA reaffirms its support for academic freedom. It reiterates the sentiments of its original statement: “While we condemn any form of political violence, we insist that academics must have the right to express their political views freely and without having to fear for their jobs or personal freedom.”

If academic freedom concerns arise, please visit the Academic Freedom webpage and submit concerns via the link (http://www.isanet.org/ISA/Governance/Committees/Academic-Freedom).
