The International Studies Association (ISA) is delighted to announce that Thomas G. Weiss, Presidential Professor of Political Science at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, is the recipient of the 2016 recipient of the International Organization (IO) Distinguished Scholar Award.  The award was created to recognize scholars of exceptional merit who have made distinctive marks in the field and whose influence, intellectual works, and mentorship will likely continue to impact the field for years to come.  The award will be presented at the ISA’s 2016 annual convention in Atlanta.

Weiss’ life’s work has centered on advancing scholarly knowledge of international organization and global governance.  His scholarship and thinking have deeply influenced an entire generation of scholars and policymakers, as it also crosses disciplines and issue areas, including the study of international organization, history, political science, conflict management, identity politics, foreign policy, civilian protection, humanitarian politics, human rights, international ethics, culture and society, international political economy, and international law.

His colleagues and students recognize him as an indefatigable researcher, teacher, writer, practitioner, and mentor.

Weiss is a world-renowned scholar – authoring (or co-authoring) some 45 books and 225 articles and book chapters that have been published with some of the most prestigious presses and journals in international organization studies.  Indeed, Weiss is one of the most recognizable intellectual voices in international organization studies today and there can be no doubt that he has left (and continues to leave) a distinctive intellectual mark on the study of international organization.

Not only is Tom an exceptional scholar with proven leadership skills, he is also a truly committed teacher and mentor to dozens of graduate students and newly-minted PhDs.  Even after his students have gone on to build successful careers in academia and the policy world, Weiss remains engaged in their professional development – identifying writing and research opportunities, or drawing them into his projects and workshops as collaborators and co-authors.

Alongside mentoring, Tom is deeply committed to service to the profession, through wide-ranging engagement with professional associations, journals, and other associations.  This includes serving as President of the International Studies Association; Chair of the ACUNS Board of Directors; co-editor of the top-rated IO journal, Global Governance; and Chair of the IO section of ISA.  He is currently a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the International Institute for Strategic Studies; is series co-editor (with Rorden Wilkinson) of Routledge’s “Global Institutions Series”; serves on ten editorial boards; and also consults for foundations and numerous inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations on global governance issues.

It is clear that Weiss has profoundly shaped the field and will continue to do so for many years to come.  Please join us in Atlanta where we will hold a roundtable and a reception to celebrate his extraordinary life’s work.
